Design of AlGaN microring resonators for broadband biphoton excitation

Vittorio M. N. Passaro, Francesco De Leonardis, Richard A. Soref

Nowadays, Quantum Photonics finds a number of significant applications, such as Quantum Computing and Quantum Communication. Silicon on Insulator (SOI) technology has proven its potential for the generation of correlated photon pairs through the spontaneous four wave mixing (SFWM) effect, but not in the visible wavelength range. In this invited paper we present the physical investigation and design guidelines of AlGaN microring resonators for generating photon entanglement, as induced by SFWM in the visible. The work theoretically demonstrates the possibility of realizing the on-chip generation of correlated pairs of photons within integrated microring resonators based on the AlGaN/AlN technological platform, due to its wide bandgap, crystalline structure and low losses. Furthermore, general physical features are presented by means of a parametric analysis of the biphoton flux and cross correlation as a function of the device parameters, i.e. ring radius, resonator cross section and sizes, pulley coupling. Moreover, the spectral features of the generated signal and idler photons have been analyzed as a function of the pump resonance mismatch for several Kerr coefficients and input visible “blue” pump powers. Cross correlation values around 2.3 ×104at a biphoton flux of about 9×104pairs/s and 2×103at about 2.9×106pairs/s for ring radius of 200 μm and 30 μm have been achieved, respectively, assuming a input pump power of 25 mW, while the signal is generated at wavelength of 369.5 nm and idler at 535.72 nm, for ring radius of 200 μm, and 369.5 and 457.45 nm for ring radius of 30 μm, respectively. These devices can be important for many applications, going from UV-visible spectroscopy to quantum sensing to image processing to nonlinear optics.

Nonlinear Optical Bistability in Microring Resonators for Enhanced Phase Sensing

Patrick Tritschler, Christian Schweikert, Rouven H. Klenk +7 more

Photonic microring resonators are used in a variety of chip-integrated sensing applications where they allow one to measure transmission intensity changes upon external signals with a sensitivity that scales linearly with the Q factor. In this work, we suggest exploiting the nonlinear self-phase-modulation effect to increase the overall sensitivity by an additional gain factor appearing when the operational point of the nonlinear resonator is chosen just at the crossover from the monostable to the bistable regime. We present the theoretical idea together with a first proof of concept experiment displaying a gain factor of 22 on a chip-integrated silicon-nitride resonator.

Long Distance Communication Using Localized Optical Soliton via Entangled Photon

Iraj Sadegh Amiri

A system of microring resonators (MRRs) is presented to generation entangled photon.Different time slot for continuous variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) use is applicable in optical wireless link.Chaotic behavior of a soliton pulse within the device can be presented respect to the Kerr nonlinear type of light in the MRR devices.Continuous spatial and temporal signals are generated spreading over the spectrum. The CVQKD is formed using the localized spatial soliton pulse. Here localized temporal soliton with FWHM and FSR of 0.2 ps and 0.58 ns is obtained respectively. The spatial soliton pulse has a FWHM of 80 pm.Transmission of soliton pulse with FWHM of 1.5 ps is simulated along the long distance fiber optics where the polarized photons are formed incorporating with the polarization control unit into the MRRs, which allows different time slot entangled photons to be randomly formed.
