Depolarization of NaD2 Fluorescence under Pulsed Laser Excitation

V. Kroop, Wolfgang Behmenburg

Abstract The intensity and polarization state of the NaD2-fluorescence (3 2P3/2→3 2S1/2 , λ 5890 Å) from a cell containing pure Na vapor, selectively excited by a flash lamp pumped dye laser was investigated. Measurements were performed both for excitation with π-and σ-light of spectral density ranging between 10-23 and 10-17 Ws2 cm-3 and with Na number densities between 2.8 X109 and 4.0 X 1010 cm-3. The results are interpreted in terms of population of the 2P3/2 state and of hyperfine and Zeeman pumping of the 2S1/2 substates. The values for the degree of linear polarization measured at the smallest excitation densities and Na pressures agree well with theoretical values.

One- and two-photon production of very highly excited states of caesium

Anthony F. J. van Raan, G. Baum, Wilhelm Raith

Very highly excited p states of Cs with principal quantum numbers 30<or=n<or=85 were produced by one-step photoexcitation with frequency-doubled light from a flash-lamp-pumped dye laser. Field ionization was employed for selective detection. Ionization occurs at field strengths E>or=E min with a sharp threshold. The relation E min (n*) varies as (n*) -4 was verified over a wide range. Two-photon excitation to a very high state via a virtual intermediate state leads to immediate ionization of most of the excited atoms; in this case the ion signal as a function of the light intensity I is not proportional to I k , k>or=2, whereas a direct two-photon transition into the continuum yields proportionality with I 2 .

Effect of the solvent viscosity on the local irregular intensity fluctuations in high Fresnel number dye lasers

Óscar G. Calderón, I. Leyva, J.M. Guerra

We study the influence of the solvent viscosity in the local irregular intensity fluctuations characteristic of high Fresnel number dye lasers. The relative amplitude of the fluctuations in a flashlamp-pumped dye laser is analyzed, We complete our previous work by using several solvents and different excitation energies above threshold. A decrease of the relative fluctuation amplitude is found as the solvent viscosity or the pumping energy increases. This effect is theoretically analyzed in the framework of the semiclassical Maxwell-Bloch equations, with a model based on the orientation of the dye molecules driven by the laser field in the solvent. These results point out the importance of the orientation of the dye molecules in the intensity fluctuation phenomenon.
