Competing bilinear and biquadratic exchange couplings in spin-1 Heisenberg chains

Abstract

A spin-1 magnetic chain with bilinear and biquadratic exchange couplings is studied to determine its phase diagram. The character of the ground state and its degeneracy is determined from an analysis of the low-lying levels of finite chains and from the instability of the uniform lattice against dimerization. Evidence for a ferromagnetic phase, two antiferromagnetic phases (with doubled and tripled periods), and a singlet phase is found.

Non-Heisenberg couplings and ferromagnetic instability in a random antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain

R. N. Bhatt, Kun Yang

A random antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain with both Heisenberg and biquadratic nearest neighbor couplings is found to exhibit a novel ferromagnetic-like instability at low energies, if there is competition between the Heisenberg and biquadratic couplings, even though each individual nearest neighbor coupling is such as to produce a singlet ground state for the isolated pair. This instability leads to the generation of ferromagnetic couplings, and thus to the formation of weakly coupled large moments at low temperatures. A perturbative calculation (up to 4th order) is performed to investigate whether such a situation is physically realizable in spin-1 systems.

Spin-1 biquadratic chain: Magnetization curve (abstract)

J. C. Bonner

The antiferromagnetic (AFM) s=1 chain with biquadratic exchange coupling has recently been the subject of considerable attention, and some controversy. Theoretical arguments by Affleck that the model has dimerized character associated with a small spectral excitation gap have not received unanimous support from numerical calculations. For finite systems the field-dependent dispersion spectra are interesting and informative concerning the nature of the model. The excitations divide into two classes having very different character, corresponding to SzT even and SzT odd. Reflection symmetry about k=π/2 is apparent if states with a given total spin ST, rather than SzT, are plotted as a function of wavevector k, consistent with the Affleck prediction of dimerized character. The high degeneracy of the eigenstates reflects the existence of new symmetry operators which (a) shift the SzT value, (b) change wave vector k to π/2−k, and (c) shift the total spin quantum ST, of the energy eigenstates. Parkinson has recently observed that finite N states with SzT even and SzT≥2 map into states of the finite N s= 1/2 XXZ model at a special value of uniaxial anisotropy. Barber and Batchelor (unpublished) have shown the existence of an analytic mapping between states of the s=1 biquadratic chain and the 2D 9-state Potts model. They further show that all states of the Parkinson s= 1/2 XXZ model map into states of the s=1 biquadratic model. Hence, they find the ground state and first excited state energies exactly, and verify the Affleck picture. Their approach falls short of establishing complete integrability, however. Numerical studies on finite chains indicate that the T=0 magnetization curve is determined by the lowest-energy states for given SzT even, which are states of the s= 1/2 XXZ chain. Hence the magnetization curve of the s=1 AFM biquadratic chain is the same as the analytically known magnetization curve of the s= 1/2 XXZ chain!

Exotic Ground State Phases of S=1/2 Heisenberg Δ-Chain with Ferromagnetic Main Chain

Kazuo Hida

The ground state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg frustrated $Δ$-chain with a ferromagnetic main chain is investigated. In addition to the ferromagnetic phase, various nonmagnetic ground states are found. If the ferromagnetic coupling between apical spins and the main chain is strong, this model is approximated by a spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic chain and the spin quadrupolar phase with spin-2 gapless excitation is realized in addition to the Haldane and ferromagnetic phases. In the regime where the coupling between the apical spins and the main chain is weak, the numerical results which suggest the possibility of a series of phase transitions among different nonmagnetic phases are obtained. Physical pictures of these phases are discussed based on the numerical results.

Probable absence of a quadrupolar spin-nematic phase in the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain

K. Buchta, Gábor Fáth, Örs Legeza +1 more

We study numerically the ground-state phase diagram of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain near the ferromagnetic instability point, where the existence of a gapped or gapless nondimerized quantum nematic phase has been suggested. Our results, obtained by a highly accurate density-matrix renormalization-group calculation, are consistent with the view that the order parameter characterizing the dimer phase vanishes only at the point where the system becomes ferromagnetic, although the existence of a gapped or gapless nondimerized phase in a very narrow parameter range between the ferromagnetic and the dimerized regimes cannot be ruled out.

Ground-State Phase Diagram and Magnetization Curves of the Spin-1 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chain with Bond Alternation and Uniaxial Single-Ion-Type Anisotropy

Takashi Tonegawa, Takeshi Nakao, Makoto Kaburagi

Ground-state properties of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with bond alternation and uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy, which is described by the Hamiltonian \({\cal H}_0 = \sum_{\ell=1}^N\{1-(-1)^\ell\alpha\}{\mib S}_\ell\cdot{\mib S}_{\ell+1} + D\sum_{\ell=1}^N\;(S_\ell^z)^2\) (0.0 ≤α≤1.0, -∞< D < ∞), are studied. An exact diagonalization method by means of the Lanczös technique is used. The ground-state phase diagram on the α versus D plane at the thermodynamic limit is determined by analyzing the Binder parameters associated with Néel order and z -direction string order for finite-size ( N = 6, 8, …, 16) chains. It is found that there exists a multicritical point at which the Haldane, Néel, and singlet-dimer phases meet and that the singlet-dimer phase and the large- D phase belong to the same unique phase. The ground-state magnetization curves at the thermodynamic limit for various values of α and D are obtained for the system described by the Hamiltonian, H 0 plus the Zeeman term - H ∑ ℓ=1 N S ℓ z . The results show that the 1/2-plateau appears in the magnetization curve at least when D ≥0.0 and \(0.0\lesssim\alpha \leq 1.0\).
