Abstract

A theoretical comparison of the behavior of the antihydrogen $(\overline{\mathrm{H}})$ and hydrogen $(\mathrm{H})$ atoms in external electric and magnetic fields is made. It is shown that observable differences arise in the spectroscopic properties of $\mathrm{H}$ and $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$ atoms in parallel electric and magnetic fields of the order of 475 V∕cm and 0.12 T, respectively.

Quantum Beats in Hydrogen and Antihydrogen Atoms in an External Electric Field

Leonti N Labzowsky, V. Sharipov

An effect of quantum beats that arises due to the coherent excitation of 2s and 2p states of hydrogen and antihydrogen atoms in an external electric field is described. It is shown that the quantum beat signal contains terms linear in electric field, i.e., is of opposite sign for the hydrogen and antihydrogen atoms. The conditions for the observation of this effect are discussed.

Probabilities of single-photon 2s–1s transition in hydrogen and antihydrogen atoms in an external electric field

D. A. Solov’ev, V. Sharipov, L. N. Labzovskiǐ +1 more

The probabilities of single-photon 2s–1s transition in hydrogen (H) and antihydrogen ( $$ \bar H $$ ) atoms in an external electric field are calculated. These quantities are different for H and $$ \bar H $$ due to the presence of a T odd term linearly dependent on the electric field strength. The relative difference between the probabilities of the considered process for hydrogen and antihydrogen is given, and the conditions under which this difference can be measured are discussed.

Internal and external dynamics of antihydrogen in electric and magnetic fields of arbitrary orientation

Michal Špaček, V. Petráček

We have studied the motion of antihydrogen atoms in electric and magnetic fields of arbitrary orientation. Our aim was to find an exact model of external (centre-of-charge) and internal dynamics which would allow us to describe antihydrogen motion in a realistic way. After analysing the kinematics of the charge exchange reaction producing antihydrogen and of antihydrogen deexcitation, we discuss the dynamics in cases of special fields configurations. Finally, we propose an expression for the force acting on an antihydrogen atom when the field configuration is arbitrary. The general formula -- when reduced in the special field configurations -- matches the results which we obtained independently before. The focus is both on the centre of charge dynamics and on the accurate internal quantum characteristics.

Rydberg-state mixing in the presence of an external electric field: Comparison of the hydrogen and antihydrogen spectra

Dmitry A. Solovyev, Elena V. Solovyeva

We analyze the influence of an external electric field on the $ns$ and $np$ Rydberg states. The impact of an electric field leads to a significant modification of the decay rate. Namely, the additional (linear and quadratic in the field) terms arise in the differential transition probabilities. In contrast to the quadratic term, the linear summand leads to a difference of the hydrogen $(\text{H})$ and antihydrogen $(\overline{\text{H}})$ spectra. However, this difference vanishes after the integration over photon-emission directions and does not contribute to the total emission probability. The quadratic term results in the significant change of the total decay rate and level width, respectively. The analysis of the linear and quadratic terms depending on the field strength is discussed.

COMPOSITE SYSTEMS IN MAGNETIC FIELD: FROM HADRONS TO HYDROGEN ATOM

B. O. KERBIKOV

We briefly review the recent studies of the behavior of composite systems in magnetic field. The hydrogen atom is chosen to demonstrate the new results which may be experimentally tested. Possible applications to physics of antihydrogen are mentioned.
