We study spin imbalance effects on the Josephson junction of superconductors under a strong magnetic field and the grey soliton in spin-polarized ultracold Fermi gas. We obtain the exact solution for the condensates with arbitrary spin imbalance and the fermion spectrum perturbatively in the presence of small spin imbalance.
A minimal coupling quantum hydrodynamic model of spin-1/2 fermions at the full spin polarization corresponding to a nonlinear Schrodinger equation is considered. The nonlinearity is primarily caused by the Fermi pressure. It provides an effective repulsion between fermions. However, there is the additional contribution of the short-range interaction appearing in the third order by the interaction radius. It leads to the modification of the pressure contribution. Solitons are considered for the infinite medium with no restriction on the amplitude of the wave. The Fermi pressure leads to the soliton in form of the area of decreased concentration. However, the center of solution corresponding to the area of minimal concentration has nonzero value of concentration. Therefore, the grey soliton is found. Soliton exist if the speed of its propagation is below the Fermi velocity.
In this paper the properties of dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases with spin imbalance are studied by means of a recently developed effective field theory [Eur. Phys. J. B 88, 122 (2015)] suitable to describe the BEC-BCS crossover in ultracold gases in an extended range of temperatures as compared to the usual Ginzburg--Landau treatments. The spatial profiles for the total density and for the density of the excess-spin component, and the changes of their properties across the BEC-BCS crossover are examined in different conditions of temperature and imbalance. The presence of population imbalance is shown to strongly affect the structure of the soliton excitation by filling its core with unpaired atoms. This in turn influences the dynamical properties of the soliton since the additional particles in the core have to be dragged along thus altering the effective mass.
We investigate the possibility of a superfluid-ferromagnet-superfluid (SFS) junction in a superfluid Fermi gas. To examine this possibility in a simple manner, we consider an attractive Hubbard model at T=0 within the mean-field theory. When a potential barrier is embedded in a superfluid Fermi gas with population imbalance (${N}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}>{N}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}$, where ${N}_{\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ is the number of atoms with pseudospin $\ensuremath{\sigma}= \ensuremath{\uparrow}$, $\ensuremath{\downarrow}$), this barrier is shown to be magnetized in the sense that excess $\ensuremath{\uparrow}$-spin atoms are localized around it. The resulting superfluid Fermi gas is spatially divided into two by this ferromagnet, so that one obtains a junction similar to the superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor junction discussed in superconductivity. Indeed, we show that the so-called $\ensuremath{\pi}$ phase, which is a typical phenomenon in the SFS junction, is realized, where the superfluid order parameter changes its sign across the junction. Our results would be useful for the study of magnetic effects on fermion superfluidity using an ultracold Fermi gas.
The spin-asymmetric Josephson effect is a proposed quantum-coherent tunneling phenomenon where Cooper-paired fermionic spin-21 particles, which are subjected to spin-dependent potentials across a Josephson junction, undergo frequency-synchronized alternating-current Josephson oscillations with spin-dependent amplitudes. Here, in line with present-day techniques in ultracold Fermi gas setups, we consider the regime of small Josephson oscillations and show that the Josephson plasma oscillation amplitude becomes spin dependent in the presence of spin-dependent potentials, while the Josephson plasma frequency is the same for both spin components. Detecting these spin-dependent Josephson plasma oscillations provides a possible means to establish the yet-unobserved spin-asymmetric Josephson effect with ultracold Fermi gases using existing experimental tools.
