CRITICAL DYNAMICS OF THE XY-MODEL ON THE ONE-DIMENSIONAL SUPERLATTICE BY POSITION SPACE RENORMALIZATION GROUP

Abstract

The critical dynamics of the isotropic XY-model on the one-dimensional superlattice is considered in the framework of the position space renormalization group theory. The decimation transformation is introduced by considering the equations of motion of the operators associated to the excitations of the system, and it corresponds to an extension of the procedure introduced by Stinchcombe and dos Santos (J. Phys. A18, L597 (1985)) for the homogeneous lattice. The dispersion relation is obtained exactly and the static and dynamic scaling forms are explicitly determined. The dynamic critical exponent is also obtained and it is shown that it is identical to the one of the XY-model on the homogeneous chain.

Critical dynamics of quantum chains by position space renormalisation group

R B Stinchombe, Raimundo R. dos Santos

A decimation transformation is applied to the homogeneous equations of motion for creation and annihilation operators of kink-like excitations of the transverse Ising and XY chains at zero temperature. The authors obtain the exact dispersion relations and their dynamic scaling form. The static behaviour is derived as the zero frequency limit of the recursion relations.

Surface Tension of the Induced Magnetization in the 1D Isotropic XY-Model

J.P. de Lima, L.L. Gonçalves

The surface tension of the induced magnetization in the one-dimensional isotropic ferromagnetic XY-model (s = 1/2, open chain) is considered. The magnetization domains are induced by an inhomogeneous transverse field, and the model can be exactly solved by using the Green function technique. At T = 0 the system undergoes a quantum transition in the bulk driven by the field which is associated to the induced renormalized magnetization. In this temperature limit, the surface tension is determined, and it is shown that, when properly renormalized, it follows a scaling law near the critical point, with a critical exponent μ equal to 1. A brief review is presented for the calculations of the critical exponents and it is also shown that they satisfy the known relations, provided the effective classical dimension is equal to 3. Since the dynamic exponent z is equal to 2, this result confirms the dynamic shift in the dimensionality of the system, d+z, as expected for the quantum transitions. It is also shown that, consistently with this result, the dimension d in the relation μ = (d-1)ν for classical systems should be replaced by the effective dimension d+z for quantum transitions.

Critical dynamics of elastic phase transitions

R. Folk, Harald Iro, Franz Schwabl

The critical dynamics at elastic phase transitions of second order is studied by the renormalization-group theory. The dynamical theory is based on a stochastic equation of motion for damped phonons. For systems with one-dimensional soft sectors usual dynamical scaling holds with the critical dynamical exponent $z=2$. For two-dimensional sectors logarithmic corrections appear. Novel features are found for an isotropic-phonon model. The dynamical susceptibility and the characteristic frequency depend singularly on an irrelevant parameter, which, however, diverges at the fixed point. Consequently dynamical scaling breaks down; e.g., the characteristic frequency is no longer a homogeneous function of the wave number $k$ and the inverse correlation length ${\ensuremath{\xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Instead it is a homogeneous function of these variables and an irrelevant parameter. Consequently, the critical dynamics can be characterized by the relaxational exponent $z=2+c\ensuremath{\eta}$ at ${T}_{c}$, while in the hydrodynamic region the sound frequency is characterized by $z=2\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2}\ensuremath{\eta}$ and the damping by yet another exponent. This breakdown of scaling is also reflected by the fact that different fixing conditions, i.e., different choices of the frequency, lead to different values of $z$. All of these apparently different transformations lead to the same modified dynamical scaling relations.

The anisotropic XY-model on the 1d alternating superlattice

F. F. Barbosa Filho, J.P. de Lima

The anisotropic XY-model in a transverse field (s=1/2) on the one-dimensional alternating superlattice (closed chain) is considered. The solution of the model is obtained by introducing a generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation which maps the system onto a non-interacting fermion gas. The exact excitation spectrum is determined by reducing the problem to a diagonalization of a block matrix, and it is shown that it is numerically identical to the one obtained by using the approximate transfer matrix method . The induced magnetization and the susceptibility $χ^{zz}$ are determined as a function of the transverse field, and it is shown that, at T=0, the susceptibility presents multiple singularities. It is also shown, as expected, that this critical behaviour driven by transverse field belongs to the same universality class of the model on the alternating chain.

Exact real space renormalisation group transformation for the dimerised XY chain

G. Spronken, M. Avignon

An analytical real space renormalisation group transformation is obtained for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic dimerised XY model. Using the method of Sarker (1984) the recursion relations for the parameters are derived from the mapping between blocks of sizes L and L/b, for arbitrary size L and scale factor b. The results for the gap and for the critical exponent are shown to converge rapidly toward their exact values. The dynamical exponent has 1/L corrections (b approximately 1) instead of the usual 1/ln L ones (b=L). The differential renormalisation group equations are obtained explicitly. The authors show that the non-analyticity of the scaling function (for the density of energy) stems from a dangerous irrelevant variable, the antiferromagnetic coupling.

Critical dynamics of the kinetic Glauber-Ising model on hierarchical lattices

Xiang-Mu Kong, Zhao‐Di Yang

The critical dynamics of the kinetic Glauber-Ising model is studied on a family of the diamond-type hierarchical lattices with various branches. By carrying out the time-dependent real-space renormalization-group transformation to the master equation of the systems considered, the dynamic exponent is calculated. We find that the dynamic exponent depends on fractal dimension d(f) or the branch number m in a generator, and that it increases with the increase of d(f) or m. We notice that for the case of m=1 (one-dimensional spin chain, d(f)=1) our result z=2 is the same as the exact result obtained by Glauber, and for the case of m=2 (the simplest one in the diamond-type hierarchical lattices, d(f)=2) the exponent z=2.626 is higher than those of the two-dimensional regular lattice and the triangular lattice.
