Comment on "Condition for nonexistence of Aharonov-Bohm effect"

U. Klein

A recent attempt to deny the crucial role of inaccessible fields in experiments performed to test the predictions of Aharonov and Bohm is critically discussed. It is shown that these experiments may well be considered to show the reality of the Aharonov-Bohm effect even if it is correct to say that the results are completely determined by the accessible field.

Experimental confirmation of Aharonov-Bohm effect using a toroidal magnetic field confined by a superconductor

Nobuyuki Osakabe, Tsuyoshi Matsuda, Takeshi Kawasaki +4 more

The electron holography technique was employed to make a crucial test of the existence of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect. The relative phase shift was measured between two electron waves passing through spaces inside and outside a tiny toroidal ferromagnet, covered completely with a superconductor layer and a Cu layer. Below the transition temperature the relative phase shift was measured to be 0 or \ensuremath{\pi} due to the magnetic-flux quantization in units of h/2e. The results directly demonstrated the existence of the AB effect even when the magnetic field was confined by the surrounding superconductor due to the Meissner effect and an electron beam was prevented from penetrating the magnet.

Is There an Aharonov-Bohm Effect for Neutrons?

Daniel M. Greenberger, D. K. Atwood, John Arthur +2 more

A neutron interferometer experiment testing the existence of an Aharonov-Bohm effect has been performed and no measurable phase shift has been found upon reversal of the enclosed magnetic flux. A positive result would have provided evidence for a breakdown in the standard minimal-coupling scheme for the electromagnetic interaction of a neutron. The sensitivity of the experiment sets the ratio of the Aharonov-Bohm effect for a neutron to that of a particle of charge $e$ to be less than 5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}12}$.
