Experimental constraints on the polarizabilities of the 6s2 1S0 and 6s6p 3P0o states of Yb

K. Beloy

We utilize accurate experimental data available in the literature to yield bounds on the polarizabilities of the ground and first-excited states of atomic Yb. For the $6{s}^{2}{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{1}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{S}_{0}^{}$ ground state, we find the polarizability $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ to be constrained to $134.4<\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\le}144.2$ in atomic units while for the $6s6p{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{3}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{P}_{0}^{o}$ excited state, we find $280.1<\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\le}289.9$. The uncertainty in each of these values is 1.0. These constraints provide a valuable check for ab initio and semiempirical methods used to compute polarizabilities and other related properties in Yb.

Magic wavelengths for the 6 s 2 1 S 0 – 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 o transition in ytterbium atom

Zhi-Ming Tang, Yanmei Yu, Jun Jiang +1 more

Abstract The static and dynamic electric dipole polarizabilities of the 6 s 2 1 S 0 and 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 o states of Yb are calculated by using the relativistic ab initio method. Focusing on the red detuning region to the 6 s 2 1 S 0 – 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 o transition, we find two magic wavelengths at 1035.7(2) and 612.9(2) nm for the 6 s 2 1 S 0 – 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 o , M J = 0 transition and three magic wavelengths at 1517.68(6), 1036.0(3) and 858(12) nm for the 6 s 2 1 S 0 – 6 <mm

Collisions of trapped ions with ultracold atoms in [YbRb]+systems

H D L Lamb, John Goold, J F McCann +2 more

We investigate the ultracold, elastic-scattering of a trapped atom and a trapped ion. The low-energy potential surfaces of the [ 174 Yb− 87 Rb] + are estimated and the polarizability and higher-order multipole coefficients are obtained from ab initio calculations. The polarizability of the Ytterbium atom is well reproduced and the scattering length is estimated. The excited-state Yb + -Rb system is analysed in detail with a view to applications in hybrid ion-atom traps.
