Optical bistability in BDN dye

Abstract

We report optical bistability in a Fabry-Perot filled with BDN saturable absorbing dye occurring due to an intensity-dependent phase shift. A four-level model is used to show that the phase shift arises from nonresonant dispersion due to an excited metastable state which is excited in the process of saturable absorption. Preliminary experiments confirm the theoretical predictions.

Optical Bistability in Four-Level Nonradiative Dyes

Zhen Fu Zhu, E. Garmire

Most saturably absorbing dyes show a large unstaturable loss which removes the possibility of purely absorptive bistability. However, nonradiative dyes such as those used for Q-switching have an intensity-dependent phase shift which may allow bistability. We will show that this nonlinear refractive index comes from the population redistribution during saturable absorption.

ANALYTICAL MODEL FOR OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN LASER WITH SATURABLE ABSORBER

Smail Djabi, H. Boudoukha, Saïd Meguellati

In this paper, we develop a theoretical model that accurately describes the nonlinear phenomenon of optical bistability in Fabry-Perot laser containing a saturable absorber "LSA". We present an analytical model for optical bistability in a LSA. The physics of optical bistability in a classical optical resonant system such as Fabry-Perot etalon has been well-established, and can be described by simple analytical models. The photon intensities were determined as a function of the pumping rate of the active medium, and we analyzed the linear stability of the stationary solutions obtained.

Absorptive optical bistability in organic media under the influence of transverse effects

Eliška Jurisová, Jarmila Müllerová

The influence of transverse effects on optical bistability in Fabry-Perot cavity filled with saturable absorber was numerically investigated. A simple model of singlet absorption was used on numerically solving the relationships between the input and output light fields. The proposed model corresponds well to organic compounds considered as novel optical materials with third-order optical nonlinearities. The proposed optically bistable systems were demonstrated for two organic dyes of fluorescein and rhodamine 6G dispersed in transparent solid matrices. Their optically bistable behaviour was anticipated considering the homogeneous and Gaussian distribution of light energy in the radial direction. Most notable cases are discussed related to the changes of the Gaussian beam radii, positive feedback conditions in the Fabry-Perot cavity and considering linear and nonlinear absorption parameters of the organic media. The simulation results enabled us to establish numerically thresholds of Fabry-Perot mirror reflectance and Gaussian beam radius for both nonlinear organic materials, above which absorptive optical bistability can occur. The results can be helpful in design of optical switches for all-optical communication networks.

Numerical Studies of Optical Bistability of Absorptive Type

Eliška Jurisová, Jarmila Müllerová

Theoretical analysis is presented to search for the purely absorptive optical bistability in a Fabry-Perot cavity filled with a saturable absorber. A simple model of singlet absorption is used on numerically solving the relationships between the input and output light fields. The proposed model corresponds well to organic compounds considered as novel optical materials with third-order optical nonlinearities. The effects of saturable absorber parameters on the output light characteristics are studied and purely absorptive optical bistabilities are shown numerically to search for bistable behaviour. The simulated results are indications for promising applications in optical switches for all-optical communication networks.

Laser induced optical bistability in MgPc dye

Anil Kumar, Devendra Mohan, Arun Kumar Gupta

In the present work, optical bistability using a Fabry-Perot cavity containing MgPc dye dissolved in toluene of different concentrations have been experimentally investigated by using a single mode Q-switched nanosecond Nd:YAG laser operating at ~532nm.The nonlinear refractive index n2 is numerically estimated from the bistabe loop and found to be in close approximations with the previously reported values. The nature of the bistable loop depicts the reverse saturable absorption (RSA) process in the medium under study.Absorptive type bistability is found to be predominant over dispersive bistability.

Optical bistability in an all-optical fiber nonlinear fabry-perot resonator with linear absorption

Shenping Li, K.T. Chan

An all-optical fiber nonlinear Fabry-Perot resonator is proposed. The steady-state model for describing this resonator is developed. The transmission and refection bistabilities are shown numerically. Our results show that the bistability in this system is similar to that in a normal nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon, except that the characteristics of the bistability can be changed not only by the cavity length but also by the phase shifts of the fiber loop mirrors.
