Inhomogeneous Ising chain in a transverse field: finite-size scaling and asymptotic conformal spectrum

Abstract

The quantum version of the Hilhorst-van Leeuwen model i.e. an inhomogeneous Ising model in a transverse field with a marginal perturbation of the bulk interaction varying like l -1 with the distance l from the surface is studied numerically on a finite chain with symmetric interactions using fermion techniques and finite-size scaling at the bulk critical point. The surface exponents for the energy and the magnetisation are respectively x e =2 alpha +2, x m = alpha +1/2 when alpha >or= alpha c and x e =- alpha +1/2, x m =0 and x' m =- alpha -1/2 when alpha <or= alpha c where alpha c =-1/2 is the critical value of the perturbation amplitude below which the surface becomes ordered at the bulk critical point.

Local critical behaviour at aperiodic surface extended perturbation in the Ising quantum chain

Dragi Karevski, Gábor Palágyi, L. Urban

The surface critical behaviour of the semi-infinite one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a transverse field is studied in the presence of an aperiodic surface-extended modulation. The perturbed couplings are distributed according to a generalized Fredholm sequence, leading to a marginal perturbation and varying surface exponents. The surface magnetic exponents are calculated exactly, whereas the expression of the surface energy density exponent is conjectured from a finite-size scaling study. The system displays surface order at the bulk critical point, above a critical value of the modulation amplitude. It may be considered as a discrete realization of the Hilhorst-van Leeuwen model.

Conformal profiles in the Hilhorst-van Leeuwen model

Dragi Karevski, Loïc Turban, Ferenc Iglói

We study the critical energy and magnetization profiles for the Ising quantum chain with a marginal extended surface perturbation of the form A / y , y being the distance from the surface (Hilhorst-van Leeuwen model). For weak local couplings, A < A c , the model displays a continuous surface transition with A -dependent exponents, whereas, for A > A c , there is surface order at the bulk critical point. If conformal invariance is assumed to hold with such marginal perturbations, it predicts conformal profiles with the same scaling form as for the unperturbed quantum chain, with marginal surface exponents replacing the unperturbed ones. The results of direct analytical and numerical calculations of the profiles confirm the validity of the conformal expressions in the regimes of second- and first-order surface transitions.

Transverse-field Ising spin chain with inhomogeneous disorder

Dragi Karevski, Róbert Juhász, Loïc Turban +1 more

We consider the critical and off-critical properties at the boundary of the random transverse-field Ising spin chain when the distribution of the couplings and/or transverse fields, at a distance l from the surface, deviates from its uniform bulk value by terms of order ${l}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\kappa}}$ with an amplitude A. Exact results are obtained using a correspondence between the surface magnetization of the model and the surviving probability of a random walk with time-dependent absorbing boundary conditions. For slow enough decay, $\ensuremath{\kappa}<1/2,$ the inhomogeneity is relevant: Either the surface stays ordered at the bulk critical point or the average surface magnetization displays an essential singularity, depending on the sign of A. In the marginal situation $\ensuremath{\kappa}=1/2,$ the average surface magnetization decays as a power law with a continuously varying, A-dependent, critical exponent which is obtained analytically. The behavior of the critical and off-critical autocorrelation functions as well as the scaling form of the probability distributions for the surface magnetization and the first gaps are determined through a phenomenological scaling theory. In the Griffiths phase, the properties of the Griffiths-McCoy singularities are not affected by the inhomogeneity. The various results are checked using numerical methods based on a mapping to free fermions.

Critical-off-critical interface in the Ising quantum chain and conformal invariance

Bertrand Berche, Loïc Turban

The low-energy excitation spectrum of an Ising quantum chain in a transverse field which is critical (h=J=1) for 1<or=n<or=L/2 and off-critical (h not=J) for L/2(n<or=L is calculated up to O(L -1 ). Interface critical exponents are determined numerically in the odd sector and exactly in the even sector using finite-size scaling. One gets an ordinary surface transition when h)J and an extraordinary surface transition when h(J. The gap-exponent relation is verified, the mass gaps and the level degeneracy are in agreement with conformal invariance.

Inhomogeneous critical Ising model

Ferenc Iglói

The spectrum of the transfer matrix of a semi-infinite two-dimensional Isin model with marginally inhomogeneous couplings has been determined exactly in the finite-size-scaling limit at the bulk critical point. Depending on the local temperature at the boundary the surface phase transition of this system is either of first order or of second order with nonuniversal critical exponents. For a second-order transition, the excitation energies of the transfer matrix are inversely proportional to the linear size (N) of the system, but the levels are not equidistantly spaced. On the other hand, for a first-order transition the lowest gap vanishes algegraically, but faster than 1/N.

Quantum Critical Dynamics of the Random Transverse Field Ising Spin Chain

H. Rieger, Ferenc Iglói

Dynamical correlations of the spin and the energy density are investigated in the critical region of the random transverse-field Ising chain by numerically exact calculations in large finite systems (L ≤ 128). The spin-spin autocorrelation function is found to decay proportional to (log t) −2xm and (log t) −2xs m in the bulk and on the surface, respectively, with xm and x s m the bulk and surface magnetization exponents, respectively. On the other hand the critical energy-energy autocorrelation functions have a power law decay, which are characterized by novel critical exponents ηe ≈ 2.2 in the bulk and η s e ≈ 2.5 at the surface, respectively. The numerical results are compared with the predictions of a scaling theory. 05.50.+q, 64.60.Ak, 68.35.Rh Typeset using REVTEX 1 The asymptotic behavior of the time-dependent correlation functions for interacting many-body systems turned out a very difficult subject of theoretical research. Exact results in this field are scarce, one can mention the one-dimensional spin 1/2 XY-model [1] and the Ising chain in a transverse-field [2]. Both models can be mapped onto a system of non-interacting fermions, where the equal-position correlation functions are calculated by the Pfaffian method utilizing the theory of Töplitz determinants. In this Letter we consider- at the first time- the critical dynamical correlations of an interacting quantum system in the presence of quenched (i.e. time-dependent) disorder. It has recently become clear that quenched disorder has rather different effects on phase transitions in quantum systems [3] than on those thermally driven phase transitions. For example, in the Griffiths phase, which is situated at the disordered side of the critical point, the susceptibility has an essential singularity in classical systems, whereas in a quantum system the corresponding singularity is stronger, it is in a power law form. Here we consider the prototype of random quantum systems the one-dimensional random transverse-field Ising model defined by the Hamiltonian:
