Abstract

The general nonlinear stationary theory of propagation of an elliptically polarized pulse that resonantly interacts with the 1/2-1/2 transition is developed taking into account relaxation processes. It is shown that interference of magnetic sublevels in the field of polarized radiation that optically pumps atoms results in inversionless amplification of radiation. Taking into account the Doppler broadening of spectral lines shows that there exists a certain optimal length of the resonant medium along which the radiation that emerges from the medium is maximally amplified.

Nonlinear nonstationary theory of light propagation through a resonance medium taking into account optical pumping of atoms

G. G. Adonts, L. G. Marikyan

The general nonstationary theory of propagation of an elliptically polarized pulse resonantly interacting with the 1/2–1/2 transition is presented. The theory that takes into account relaxation processes is developed in terms of irreducible tensor operator representation allowing diagonalization of the relaxation matrix and introduction of effective decay times governing relaxation of both population and coherence between magnetic sublevels of the resonant system. It is shown that interference of magnetic sublevels in the field of polarized radiation that optically pumps the atoms can result in inversionless amplification of radiation.

Nonstationary theory of polarized light pulse propagation through a four-level resonant medium with allowance for nonlinear complex refractive index of medium

G. G. Adonts, Mikayel Arzakantsyan

Nonstationary theory of polarized light pulse propagation through the medium with resonant transition 1/2 -1/2 is developed with taking into account complexity of the medium nonlinear refractive index. The theory is developed based on the irreducible tensor formalism which allows diagonalizing relaxations matrix and introducing effective decay times associated with the population relaxation, as well as relaxation of coherence between magnetic sublevels of the resonant system. It is shown that as a result of interference of magnetic sublevels in the polarized radiation field the inversionless amplification of radiation occurs due to optical pumping process. The dependence of inversionless amplification on the line broadening and resonance detuning is studied.

Interference phenomena in Doppler broadened quantum transitions: Amplification of intense radiation without population inversion

A. K. Popov, V. M. Kuchin, S. A. Myslivets

We study the effect of nonlinear interference processes on quantum transitions in intense resonant electromagnetic fields with allowance for changes in level populations, relaxation processes, incoherent excitation, and Doppler broadening of the transitions, on the absorption, amplification, and refraction of the interacting fields. The theory is generalized to the case of nonlinear interference interaction of two intense fields in open and closed three-level quantum systems. Using the density matrix, we derive general expressions in the case of stationary interaction that make it possible to analyze the optical characteristics for various configurations of the interfering transitions by a simple substitution of parameters. The possibility of amplifying light without saturated population inversion in a resonant transition is discussed. We formulate the conditions for such amplification and use examples to show that under appropriate changes in the initial level populations and the intensity of the auxiliary light, the inversionless amplification coefficient does not decrease with increasing intensity of the amplified radiation. We also show that allowance for these accompanying processes greatly affects the choice of optimal conditions for interference in optical transitions. As an illustration we list the results of a numerical analysis of possible experiments.

Ultrashort pulse generation in the medium with induced optical anisotropy

M. H. Hovhannisyan

Abilities of the method of accumulation of coherent unstable response of a medium for amplification of the rotated component of the probe wave’s polarization in the atomic medium of three-level atoms are studied. Probe wave is examined in frames of the perturbation theory and its frequency is considered near to one photon resonance from the ground to the first excited level. The intense monochromatic pump field connects two excited energy levels and propagates through the medium without a change. The broadening of spectral lines caused by the relaxation processes and the Doppler broadening are included into the calculations. It is shown that by multiple consistent instantaneous change of input probe field’s phase from 0 to π and back, it is possible to obtain, in the tail part of the rotated component of the probe field, a separate narrowed light pulse along with the increase in intensity by more than an order of magnitude with respect to the input field.

Magnetic field rotation of a strong resonance radiation polarization plane in the media with Doppler-broadened transitions of 01 and 10 types

Sergey V. Fomichev

For atomic media with resonant Doppler-broadened transitions of J=0 to J'=1 or J=1 to J'=0 type and taking into account the relaxation due to depolarizing collisions a theory of nonlinear magneto-optic polarization phenomena is developed. The theory is valid in the case of both arbitrary resonance linearly-polarized radiation intensity and arbitrary external magnetic field spatial orientation. The Faraday and Voigt geometries are analysed in detail, and in the case of the Faraday geometry the effect is considered of a noncompensated magnetic field transverse component on the shape of a dependence relating the radiation polarization plane rotation angle to a magnetic field longitudinal component. In the case of the Voigt geometry an essential effect is found of the angle between the radiation initial polarization and transverse magnetic field vectors on the character of the dependence relating the radiation polarization plane rotation angle to the transverse magnetic field magnitude.

Modification of a strong resonance radiation polarization in media with Doppler-broadened transitions of 0 to 1 and 1 to 0 types and in the presence of a DC electric field

Sergey V. Fomichev

For atomic media with resonant Doppler-broadened transitions of J=0 to J'=1 or J=1 to J'=0 type and taking into account the relaxation due to depolarizing collisions, a theory of non-linear optical polarization phenomena in the presence of a DC electric field is developed. The theory is valid in the case of both arbitrary resonance radiation intensity and arbitrary external DC electric field spatial orientation. The intensity-dependent contributions to variation of radiation polarization are analysed in detail in the Doppler limit. Special attention is paid to the case of linear polarization of incident radiation; in this case as well as in the presence of a DC electric field, the Doppler-enhanced non-linear optical contributions determining the emerging ellipticity and the rotation angle of polarization, respectively, are of the same order of magnitude (unlike the case of external magnetic field, in which the key effect is the rotation of polarization). It is shown, however, that in the case of the strictly transverse geometry and if the angle between the electric field direction and the initial polarization vector is equal to 45 degrees , the Doppler-enhanced non-linear optical contribution to the rotation angle becomes anomalously small. The effect of the presence of a longitudinal component of electric field on the non-linear optical polarization phenomena is investigated. In addition, although in the case of a purely longitudinal geometry for the considered transitions the electric field effect on radiation polarization modification is absent, some analytic results concerning self-rotation and deformation of a polarization ellipse in the Doppler limit for an intense initially elliptically polarized radiation are also presented.
