Squeezing in a detuned parametric amplifier

Abstract

The effect of detuning on the squeezing obtained in a prototype model for squeezing, namely the degenerate parametric amplifier, is investigated. A squeezed minimum uncertainty state is only obtained in a set of variables related to the original variables by a time dependent transformation. The required transformation is obtained using a symplectic decomposition of the dynamic evolution matrix.

Effect of the pump state on the behavior of the degenerate parametric amplifier

Mark S. Hillery, Daoqi Yu, János A. Bergou

We study the effect of non-coherent-state pumps on the behavior of the degenerate parametric amplifier. This is done both by developing some exact results and by extending the parametric approximation. Relations are found between the number fluctuations in the pump and those in the signal. The effect of initial phase uncertainty in the pump on the squeezing in the signal is also determined. In addition, we find that rotational symmetry in phase space of the signal-mode state is twice that of the pump-mode state. This implies, for example, that a pump in the squeezed vacuum state will produce a signal-mode state with a four-pronged structure. The effect of a squeezed pump with nonzero amplitude is studied by using a more general form of the parametric approximation. It is shown that in the time interval during which the parametric approximation is valid the effect of this pump is the same as one which is an incoherent superposition of coherent states. We find that while the squeezing of the pump degrades the squeezing of the signal it enhances its amplitude-squared squeezing.

Limits to squeezing and phase information in the parametric amplifier

Paul Kinsler, Mark J. Fernée, P. D. Drummond

We investigate the time evolution of squeezing in the signal mode of the undamped parametric amplifier. Both the degenerate and nondegenerate cases are considered. These are the simplest models that give limits to squeezing caused by both the intrinsic pump noise and pump depletion. Conflicting analytic expressions have been reported. We resolve this by the use of exact numerical methods, employing both number state and stochastic techniques. Our central result is that in both cases we find that the minimum in the squeezed quadrature variance scales as N${\mathrm{\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1/2}$, where N\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} is the initial coherent pump photon number. This bound on the amount of squeezing obtainable, coupled with the loss in energy due to the conversion efficiency, serves to limit the phase information in the squeezed channel to no more than that of the coherent pump. We believe this to be a fundamental limit for using the squeezed radiation generated in coherently driven parametric amplifiers.

Based on the new type of single-mode squeezed coherent state , which differs from the conventional squeezed state in that its displacement parameter depends on its squeezing parameter, we calculate the partition functioa, free energy and density matrix for a generalized degenerate parametric amplifier.

Manipulating the Squeezing Properties of a Degenerate Parametric Amplifier with Coherent, Time-Delayed Feedback

Nikolett Német, A. S. Parkins

Squeezing properties of a degenerate parametric amplifier are investigated with coherent, time-delayed feedback. Enhanced optical squeezing is obtained at frequencies set by the pump strength, the decay rates of the mirrors, and the time-delay.

Shannon entropy and the eigenstates of the single-mode squeeze operator

C. G. Bollini, L. E. Oxman

The interaction Hamiltonian for the degenerate parametric amplifier leads to an eigenvalue equation which can be solved. The solution is used to construct the propagation kernel for the state vectors. We can then follow the evolution of the squeezed variable and its conjugate one. Also the changes of entropies during the process can be followed without difficulties.

Squeezing resulting from a fourth-order interaction in a degenerate parametric amplifier with absorption losses

P. Garca-Fernández, Pere Colet, Raúl Toral +2 more

The squeezing properties of a model of a degenerate parametric amplifier with absorption losses and an added fourth-order nonlinearity have been analyzed. The approach used consists of obtaining the Langevin equation for the optical field from the Heisenberg equation provided that a linearization procedure is valid. The steady states of the deterministic equations have been obtained and their local stability has been analyzed. The stationary covariance matrix has been calculated below and above threshold. Below threshold, a squeezed vacuum state is obtained and the nonlinear effects in the fluctuations have been taken into account by a Gaussian decoupling. In the case above threshold, a phase-squeezed coherent state is obtained and numerical simulations allowed to compute the time interval, depending on the loss parameter, on which the system jumps from one stable state to the other. Finally, the variances numerically determined have been compared with those obtained from the linearized theory and the limits of validity of the linear theory have been analyzed. It has become clear that the nonlinear contribution may perhaps be profitably used for the construction of above-threshold squeezing devices.
