Abstract

The method of enhancing the information capacity and reliable storage of information in circulator fiber-optic memory is presented. The method is based on creation of an additional built-in channel with contrary-directed circulation of signals. This channel can be used for transmission of both information and auxiliary signals: address words, clock signals, correcting sequences, etc. The possibility of compensating the information signal losses by means of stimulated Raman scattering is considered.

A method for increasing the information capacity and enhancing the reliability of information storage in a dynamic fibre-optic memory is proposed. An additional built-in channel with counterpropagating circulation of signals is provided for this purpose. This additional channel can be used to transmit both information and service signals, such as address words, clock signals, correcting sequences, etc. The possibility of compensating the attenuation of an information signal by stimulated Raman scattering is considered.

The method of enhancing the information capacity and reliable storage of the information in circulator fiber-optic memory systems is presented. For this purpose the additional channel with contrary directed circulation of the signals is provided. The additional channel is simultaneously used for circulation of the clock signals and for compensation of the information signal losses in optical fiber due to stimulated Raman scattering.

Regeneration of optical signals by fiber logic elements operating through stimulated Raman scattering and development of fiber optic memory

Vladimir I. Belotitskii, Eugenii A. Kuzin, Mikhail P. Petrov +1 more

For the first time an all-optical fiber recirculating loop memory with a long storage time is demonstrated experimentally. Information is stored in the memory by recirculating optical pulses through a closed fiber loop employing all-optical repeaters operating via the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect. The time during which information storage was observed was 10 min. The number of round trips through the loop was more than 100 million.

Long-term all-optical ring fibre memory based on stimulated Raman scattering

Mikhail P. Petrov, Vladimir I. Belotitskii, Evgeny A. Kuzin +1 more

The feasibility of constructing an all-optical dynamic memory based on stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in a fibre waveguide is discussed. A possible use of an SRS inverter for regeneration of optical signals is considered. Theoretical and experimental investigations are reported of the functional properties of an SRS inverter. The construction and investigation of a prototype all-optical fibre memory with an SRS inverter are described. The repetition frequency of the optical pulses along a fibre loop is 100 MHz and the loop capacity is 500 bits. Pulse circulation is reported over a period of 10 min at an average pump power of 2 W. The response time and the energy requirements of devices with an SRS inverter, and ways of improving their characteristics are considered.

Long-term storage of a bit stream of pulses by stimulated Raman scattering

The possibility of providing long-term storage of a binary sequence of pulses circulating in a fiber loop is discussed. The regeneration of the sequence is achieved by a fiber logic gate based on stimulated Raman scattering. Estimations show that a possible pulse repetition rate of 1010 Hz for the stimulated-Raman-scattering gate operation can be expected for an average pump power of 1 W. The circulation of the binary sequence of 100-ps pulses was observed during 10 min in a loop 870 m long. It corresponds to more than 106 round trips around the loop.

We discuss the principles of development of optical logic elements using stimulated scattering in fibers.,Theoretical estimates show that it ip possilAe to movide a pulse repetition rate of 10 12 pule/s, pump pulse energy of 10 -l2 - 10 -13 J/μ 2 , and signal pulse energy of 10 -15 J/)μm 2 . Attention is focussed on the SRS-invertor and possibility of its usage for development of generators of optical pulse sequencies and fiber-optic memories.
