Quantum technologies result from the use of the laws of modern physics in increasingly sophisticated devices, promising enormous advances in computing, communication, and sensing, for both civilian and military use. As a consequence of technological progress that has miniaturized instrumentation down to atomic scales, we are witnessing the nanoscale manipulation of physical systems using intrinsic properties of quantum systems, such as entanglement. Quantum sensors are able to go beyond classical detection limits. Quantum communication offers a security advantage over classical communication. Quantum computing enables the solution of problems considered impossible to solve with classical computers. These technologies emerge as a result of advances in science and engineering, enabling the manipulation of systems at the atomic level. In this article we briefly present the fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics, the main examples of quantum technologies in sensing, communication, and computing. We show military applications and conclude by presenting the challenges and opportunities.
The rapid growth of quantum information sciences over the past few decades has fueled a corresponding rise in high profile applications in fields such as metrology, sensors, spintronics, and attosecond dynamics, in addition to quantum information processing. Realizing this potential of today's quantum science and the novel technologies based on this requires a high degree of coherent control of quantum systems. While early efforts in systematizing methods for high fidelity quantum control focused on isolated or closed quantum systems, recent advances in experimental design, measurement and monitoring, have stimulated both need and interest in the control of complex or large scale quantum systems that may also be coupled to an interactive environment or reservoir. This focus issue brings together new theoretical and experimental work addressing the formulation and implementation of quantum control for a broad range of applications in quantum science and technology today.
This textbook provides a comprehensive foundation for the emerging interdisciplinary field of quantum robotics. It systematically addresses the core question of how quantum computational principles can be formulated to address fundamental challenges in robotics: planning, optimization, perception, and control. The work is structured to build a rigorous bridge between the abstract mathematics of quantum information and the concrete computational problems of autonomous systems. The first part establishes the necessary foundations, introducing the computational models of quantum circuits alongside the classical formulations of robotic kinematics, dynamics, and state estimation. The second part is dedicated to quantum algorithmic primitives, with detailed exposition on quantum search, quantum linear algebra, and quantum optimization algorithms. Each algorithmic chapter explicitly maps these primitives to robotic problem classes, such as motion planning, sensor data processing, and trajectory optimization, discussing both potential advantages and current practical constraints. The third part focuses on system integration and forward-looking perspectives. It explores quantum machine learning models for robotic learning, outlines hybrid quantum-classical computer architectures required for real-world applications, and rigorously examines the ethical and societal implications of increasingly capable quantum-optimized autonomous systems. The textbook concludes with practical appendices detailing software tools, benchmark problems, and problem sets. Designed for graduate students and researchers in robotics, computer science, and quantum engineering, this book emphasizes clear problem formulation, realistic resource analysis, and verifiable claims. Its goal is to equip the next generation of scientists and engineers with the principles and critical perspective needed to advance the field beyond theoretical potential into practical, validated technology.
