Two particles with opposite charge in a homogeneous magnetic field: particular analytical solutions of the two-dimensional Schrödinger equation

Abstract

The two-dimensional Schrödinger equation for two particles with opposite charge and Coulomb interaction in a homogeneous magnetic field (perpendicular to the plane) is investigated. Analytical solutions are found for zero quasi-momentum (pair at rest) and for an infinite, but countable set of magnetic field values.

Exact analytical solutions of a two-dimensional hydrogen atom in a constant magnetic field

Dai-Nam Le, Ngoc-Tram D. Hoang, Van-Hoang Le

A hydrogen atom in a constant magnetic field is a problem whose Schrödinger equation has been considered to be analytically unsolvable. However, it has been found for the case of two-dimensional space some specific values of the magnetic field for which the problem has analytical solutions. In this paper, we give a full theory for these analytical solutions. First, we construct an equation to calculate of exact-solution-points, the values of magnetic field which allow exact solutions for the Schrödinger equation. The explicit forms of the wave functions corresponding to these analytical solutions are also given. Second, we analyse the exact-solution-points and discover some important rules. (i) There exist (n − 1)2 different values of the magnetic field so that the Schrödinger equation of a two-dimensional hydrogen atom in such field has exact analytical solutions with the principal quantum number n. (ii) For more details, among these (n − 1)2 exact analytical solutions, there are nr=n−|m|−1 solutions with the same magnetic quantum number m. Both properties are also proved mathematically in this paper. For illustration, some concrete values are shown for the cases of quantum number n up to 8.

Charge in a magnetic field: quasi-classical states

Franco Gori, Massimo Santarsiero, Riccardo Borghi +1 more

We propose an elementary approach for introducing the quasi-classical quantum states of a spinless charged particle in a uniform magnetic field. By exploiting the similarity with the case of the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator as well as a property of the solutions of the pertinent Schrödinger equation, we derive two basic solutions. One of them is a stationary, minimum-uncertainty wavepacket centred at an arbitrary point. This corresponds to a classical particle at rest. The other solution is a minimum-uncertainty wavepacket that rotates at the classical angular speed. The expected value of the energy agrees with the classical prediction within the zero-point energy. These results are obtained without any knowledge of the energy eigenstates. An appendix suggests a brief and self-contained procedure for writing the Hamiltonian of a charged particle under the Lorentz force.

Exact Two-Body Solutions for Two-Dimensional Interacting Electrons in a Magnetic Field

Y. F Ge

The Schrödinger equation for the two-body problem of two-dimensional interacting electrons in a magnetic field is exactly solved. It is found that the degeneracy of the Landau levels for noninteracting electrons is removed by the Coulomb interaction, and that the ground state is nondegenerate and possesses an energy gap from the first excited state. Our result suggests that the interacting electrons in a strong magnetic field form a new condensate which may be identified as a vortex.

Two electrons in an external oscillator potential: Particular analytic solutions of a Coulomb correlation problem

M. Taut

The problem of the Schr\"odinger equation for two electrons (interacting with Coulomb potentials) in an external harmonic-oscillator potential is revisited and shown to be solvable analytically for a particular, denumerably infinite set of oscillator frequencies. Solutions are given for ground and excited states in the singlet and triplet spin configurations.

On the behaviour of the solutions of certain Schredinger equations for vanishing potentials

Tovie Leon Rome

In studying the diamagnetism of free electrons in a uniform magnetic field it was found that reducing the field to zero in the wavefunction did not yield the experimentally indicated free particle plane wave wavefunction. However, solving the Schroedinger Equation resulting from setting the field equal to zero in the original equation did yield a plane wave wavefunction. This paradox was not found to be peculiar to the case of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field but was found to occur in a number of other systems. In order to gain an understanding of this unexpected behavior, the following systems were analyzed: the one-dimensional square well potential; a charged, spinless particle in a Coulomb field and in a uniform electric field; a one-dimensional harmonic oscillator; and a charged, spinless particle in a uniform magnetic field. From these studies the following were obtained: conditions for determining the result of reducing the potential in a wavefunction; the condition under which the potential of a system may be switched off while maintaining the energy of the system constant; the relationship between the result of physically switching off a potential, the result of reducing it in the wavefunction, and the solution of the Schroedinger Equation obtained by decreasing the potential to zero in the original wave equation; and a general property of any wavefunction with respect to reducing any parameter within this wavefunction.

Two charged particles in a one-dimensional well

E. Alan Salter, Gary W. Trucks, Daniel S. Cyphert

We present numerically exact solutions of the time-independent Schrödinger equation for the following system: two particles of the same charge, repelled by the Coulomb force, confined to a one-dimensional infinite well. The eigenfunctions are expanded in a basis set of product delta functions; the expansion allows the removal of the Coulomb potential’s singularity. We report and discuss our findings regarding correlated behavior in the lowest energy states of a well of length 3 bohr (1 bohr=1 Bohr radius≈0.52 Å).
