Abstract

Abstract The existence condition for bistability, B2G > 1, in a one‐coupler single‐mode optical fiber ring resonator using two different all‐fiber schemes of degenerate two‐wave mixing (DTWM) is studied in detail. It is shown that the existence condition for bistability is in general a necessary condition only, not a sufficient condition for the occurrence of the DTWM bistability. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract A theoretical study of optical bistability in a Type 1 one (planar 3 × 3) coupler fiber‐ring resonator with an all‐fiber scheme, Scheme B, of degenerate two‐wave mixing (DTWM) is presented. The bistability is caused by the DTWM, the inherent positive feedback in the fiber‐ring resonator and the nonlinear dependence of the circulating intensity of the fiber‐ring resonator on the DTWM gain. The relations between the bistability and various parameters of the fibers and the planar 3 × 3 coupler are inuestigated. A comparison between the bistability in such a jiber‐ring resonator and that using an equilateral triangular 3 × 3 fiber coupler is also made. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Single-coupler optical fiber ring resonator using degenerate two-wave mixing with a depleted pump beam: circulating and output intensities and bistability

The effect of degenerate two-wave mixing (DTWM) in a general case (i.e., with pump depletion) on a single-mode single-coupler optical fiber ring resonator is studied theoretically. Two all-fiber DTWM schemes are used. It is found that DTWM can bring about (1) a saturation-type transmission curve of the fiber ring resonator and (2) bistability in the output and circulating (resonant) intensities. In addition, the linewidth of the resonant curve of the output intensity differs from that obtained with an undepleted pump beam, and there is a central dip in the same resonant- curve. The condition for the existence of bistability is obtained. The dependence of the bistable characteristics on various parameters of the fibers and the coupler is investigated. Under certain conditions bistability can reduce the linewidth of the resonant curve of the output intensity.

Optical bistability in a two-coupler fiber ring resonator by using degenerate two-wave mixing

The bistability is caused mainly by the degenerate two-wave mixing in which the circulating intensity of the fiber ring depends on the intensity ratio of the signal to the pump beams. The dependence of the bistability on various parameters of the fibers and the couplers is investigated.

Bistability of the pump beam in one-coupler and two-coupler optical fiber ring resonators by using degenerate two-wave mixing

Bistability in the pump beam of one-coupler and two-coupler single-mode optical fiber ring resonators by using two different all-fiber schemes of degenerate two-wave mixing is demonstrated theoretically. The bistable behavior of the pump beam (or the input beam) can be controlled by changing the intensity of either the pump beam or the input beam. Depending on the scheme of the degenerate two-wave mixing and the controlling beam, the bistable hysteresis loop of the pump beam may be a normal type or an inverting type. The dependence of the bistability on some major parameters of the fibers and the couplers is investigated.

Kerr bistability in a 3 × 3 coupler optical fiber ring resonator

We present a theoretical study of bistability in an optical fiber ring resonator connected to a 3 × 3 fiber coupler. The bistability is caused by the Kerr effect when the ring resonator is working in the nonlinear regime. The dependence of the bistability on various parameters of the fiber and the coupler is investigated.
