Classification of Abelian and non-Abelian multilayer fractional quantum Hall states through the pattern of zeros

Maissam Barkeshli, Xiao-Gang Wen

A large class of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states can be classified according to their pattern of zeros, which describes the way ideal ground-state wave functions go to zero as various clusters of electrons are brought together. In this paper, we generalize this approach to classify multilayer FQH states. Such a classification leads to the construction of a class of non-Abelian multilayer FQH states that are closely related to ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{g}}_{k}$ parafermion conformal field theories, where ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{g}}_{k}$ is an affine simple Lie algebra. We discuss the possibility of some of the simplest of these non-Abelian states occurring in experiments on bilayer FQH systems at $\ensuremath{\nu}=2/3$, 4/5, 4/7, etc.

Topological quantum phase transition from a fermionic integer quantum Hall phase to a bosonic fractional quantum Hall phase through a p -wave Feshbach resonance

Shiuan-Fan Liou, Zi-Xiang Hu, Kun Yang

We use exact diagonalization to study the quantum phases and phase transitions when a single species of fermionic atoms at a Landau level filling factor ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{f}=1$ in a rotating trap interact through a $p$-wave Feshbach resonance. We show that under a weak pairing interaction, the system undergoes a second-order quantum phase transition from a ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{f}=1$ fermionic integer quantum Hall (FIQH) state at positive detuning, to a ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{b}=\frac{1}{4}$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall (BFQH) state at negative detuning. However, when the pairing interaction increases, a new phase between them emerges, corresponding to a fraction of fermionic atoms staying in a coherent superposition of a bosonic molecule state and an unbound pair. The phase transition from the FIQH phase to the new phase is of second order and that from the new phase to BFQH phase is of first order.
