On the paper by RJM Carr: 'derivation of energy lower bound models for translation-invariant many-fermion systems'

Abstract

A detailed derivation of the energy lower bound model (SHRIMP model) for a translation-invariant many-fermion system has recently been proposed (Carr 1978). The author asserts that an N-particle shell model retaining antisymmetry in all N particles is obtained. The present author wishes to point out the error in this derivation which makes the SHRIMP model wrong leaving correct the related RIP and HIP models.

A derivation of the SHRIMP energy lower bound model for translation-invariant many-fermion systems is given. Previous models are obtained as special cases.

Many-particle systems. IX. RIP and SHRIMP models

For pt.VIII see ibid., vol.4, p.665 (1971). The energy lower bound models HIP and SHIP may be substantially improved for small numbers of fermions by a simple modification to the limiting procedure in their derivation. It is shown that for intermediate values of N the modified SHIP model gives in some cases the best available lower bounds.

Incorrect lower bounds for the N-fermion problem

Martin Manning

The symmetrised versions of the Carr (1978) and Post (1977) lower bounds for N-fermion systems are examined. It is shown that both formulae, known also as the SHIP and SHRIMP models, are incorrectly derived.

Energy lower bound of a many-fermion system

E. B. Balbutsev, I.N. Mikhailov

A more detailed consideration of a trial wavefunction antisymmetry makes it possible to raise an energy lower bound of a many-fermion system. The method is particularly effective for a small number of particles.

Many-particle systems VI. N-fermion systems: derivation of a lower-bound shell model

R J M Carr, H R Post

The programme of reducing N -particle problems to one-particle problems is extended to include the Pauli principle. To calculate the ground-state energy of a system of N fermions interacting by pair forces, a rigorous lower-bound shell model is derived. This shell model follows a building-up principle, and tends to improve with increasing number of particles as well as with increasing strength of interaction. For twenty particles antisymmetric in ordinary space interacting by square-well interaction of strength V 0 a 2 = 200 hslash 2 /2 m the shell model differs by less than 8% from the calculated upper bound, and hence a fortiori from the exact energy. In order to test the quality of the approximation for various interactions, it was necessary to calculate upper bounds.

Many-particle systems VIII. Saturation and a lower-bound shell model

For pt V11 see abstr. A62988 of 1971. The lower-bound shell model developed by Carr and Post is applied to a certain class of non-local two-body interactions and shows saturation. The case of the Yamaguchi interaction is worked out in detail.
