Abstract

Compression base effect algebras were recently introduced by Gudder [Demonstr. Math. 39, 43 (2006)]. They generalize sequential effect algebras [Rep. Math. Phys. 49, 87 (2002)] and compressible effect algebras [Rep. Math. Phys. 54, 93 (2004)]. The present paper focuses on atomic compression base effect algebras and the consequences of atoms being foci (so-called projections) of the compressions in the compression base. Part of our work generalizes results obtained in atomic sequential effect algebras by Tkadlec [Int. J. Theor. Phys. 47, 185 (2008)]. The notion of projection-atomicity is introduced and studied, and several conditions that force a compression base effect algebra or the set of its projections to be Boolean are found. Finally, we apply some of these results to sequential effect algebras and strengthen a previously established result concerning a sufficient condition for them to be Boolean.

Spectral resolutions in effect algebras

Anna Jenčová, Sylvia Pulmannová

Effect algebras were introduced as an abstract algebraic model for Hilbert space effects representing quantum mechanical measurements. We study additional structures on an effect algebra E that enable us to define spectrality and spectral resolutions for elements of E akin to those of self-adjoint operators. These structures, called compression bases, are special families of maps on E , analogous to the set of compressions on operator algebras, order unit spaces or unital abelian groups. Elements of a compression base are in one-to-one correspondence with certain elements of E , called projections. An effect algebra is called spectral if it has a distinguished compression base with two special properties: the projection cover property (i.e., for every element a in E there is a smallest projection majorizing a ), and the so-called b-comparability property, which is an analogue of general comparability in operator algebras or unital abelian groups. It is shown that in a spectral archimedean effect algebra E , every a∈E admits a unique rational spectral resolution and its properties are studied. If in addition E possesses a separating set of states, then every element a∈E is determined by its spectral resolution. It is also proved that for some types of interval effect algebras (with RDP, archimedean divisible), spectrality of E is equivalent to spectrality of its universal group and the corresponding rational spectral resolutions are the same. In particular, for convex archimedean effect algebras, spectral resolutions in E are in agreement with spectral resolutions in the corresponding order unit space.

Sequential product on standard effect algebra {\cal E} (H)

Jun Shen, Junde Wu

A quantum effect is an operator $A$ on a complex Hilbert space $H$ that satisfies $0\leq A\leq I$, ${\cal E} (H)$ is the set of all quantum effects on $H$. In 2001, Professor Gudder and Nagy studied the sequential product $A\circ B=A^{1/2}BA^{1/2}$ of $A, B\in {\cal E}(H)$. In 2005, Professor Gudder asked: Is $A\circ B=A^{1/2}BA^{1/2}$ the only sequential product on ${\cal E} (H)$? Recently, Liu and Wu presented an example to show that the answer is negative. In this paper, firstly, we characterize some algebraic properties of the abstract sequential product on ${\cal E} (H)$; secondly, we present a general method for constructing sequential products on ${\cal E} (H)$; finally, we study some properties of the sequential products constructed by the method

The nth root of sequential effect algebras

Jun Shen, Junde Wu

In 2005, Gudder [Int. J. Theor. Phys. 44, 2219 (2005)] presented 25 problems of sequential effect algebras, the 20th problem asked: In a sequential effect algebra, if the square root of some element exists, is it unique? In this paper, we show that for each given positive integer n>1, there is a sequential effect algebra such that the nth root of its some element c is not unique, and the nth root of c is not the kth root of c (k<n). Thus, we answer the problem negatively.

Generalized infimum and sequential product of quantum effects

Yuan Li, Xiu-Hong Sun, Zhengli Chen

The quantum effects for a physical system can be described by the set E(H) of positive operators on a complex Hilbert space H that are bounded above by the identity operator I. For A, B∊E(H), the operation of sequential product A∘B=A1∕2BA1∕2 was proposed as a model for sequential quantum measurements. A nice investigation of properties of the sequential product has been carried over [Gudder, S. and Nagy, G., “Sequential quantum measurements,” J. Math. Phys. 42, 5212 (2001)]. In this note, we extend some results of this reference. In particular, a gap in the proof of Theorem 3.2 in this reference is overcome. In addition, some properties of generalized infimum A⨅B are studied.

A universal property for sequential measurement

Abraham Westerbaan, Bas Westerbaan

We study the sequential product the operation p∗q=pqp on the set of effects, [0, 1]𝒜, of a von Neumann algebra 𝒜 that represents sequential measurement of first p and then q. In their work [J. Math. Phys. 49(5), 052106 (2008)], Gudder and Latrémolière give a list of axioms based on physical grounds that completely determines the sequential product on a von Neumann algebra of type I, that is, a von Neumann algebra ℬ(ℋ) of all bounded operators on some Hilbert space ℋ. In this paper we give a list of axioms that completely determines the sequential product on all von Neumann algebras simultaneously (Theorem 4).

The Sequential Product of Quantum Effect

Chunfang Shao

For every A,B or A,B P(H),we defined the sequential product of A,B by AB= ABA.The main purpose of this article is to investigate some of the algebraic properties about the sequential product of quantum effect.Put some algebraic conditions on AB imply that A and B commute for the usual operator product. The result which S.Gudder got in(4),we give a wholely new proof by the technique of block operator matrix which makes the geometry structure of operators more clear.
