Kinetics of the Bose-Einstein condensation of microcavity polaritons

Abstract

We adopt a kinetic theory of polariton non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation, to describe the formation of off-diagonal long-range order. The theory accounts properly for the dominant role of quantum fluctuations in the condensate. In realistic situations with optical excitation at high energy, it predicts a significant depletion of the condensate caused by long-wavelength fluctuations. As a consequence, the one-body density matrix in space displays a partially suppressed long-range order and a pronounced dependence on the finite size of the system.

Kinetics of Bose–Einstein Condensate Formation in an Interacting Bose Gas

Yu. Kagan

The kinetics of the formation of coherent correlation properties associated with Bose condensation is studied in detail. The evolution of a nonequilibrium state with no “condensate-seed” is related to a hierarchy of relaxation times. At the first stage, a particle flux in energy space toward low energies sets in. The evolution in this case is described by a nonlinear Boltzmann equation, with a characteristic time given by interparticle collisions. When the particles which will later form the condensate have a kinetic energy which is less than the potential energy, a quasicondensate starts to form. In this stage, fluctuations of the density (but not of the phase) are suppressed and short-range coherent correlation properties are governed by the equation of motion for a quasiclassical complex field. The next stage is connected with the formation of the long-range order. The time for forming topological order and therefore genuine superfluidity proves to be dependent on the system size. The off-diagonal long-range order, arising after the attenuation of long-wave phase fluctuations, has a size-dependent relaxation time as well. Introduction The problem of Bose–Einstein Condensation (BEC) kinetics, being interesting in itself, has acquired a special significance in connection with experimental efforts to observe this condensation in a number of systems with particles with a finite lifetime. Such systems include spin-polarized atomic hydrogen [1], excitons [2] and biexcitons [3] in semiconductors and, more recently, laser-cooled atomic systems [4].

Quantum statistical theory for an exciton-polariton condensate: Fluctuations and coherence

Zhedong Zhang, Shixuan Zhao, Dangyuan Lei

A full quantum theory beyond the mean-field regime is developed for an exciton-polariton condensate, for a complete understanding of quantum fluctuations. We find an analytical solution for the polariton density matrix, showing the nonlinearity causing fast relaxation correlated with the pump so as to yield the quantum condensation above threshold. Increasing the pump intensity, a nonequilibrium phase transition towards the condensation of the lower polaritons emerges, with a statistics transiting from a thermal, through a super-Poissonian, and towards a nonclassical distribution; the latter two possess off-diagonal long-range order but the last one is beyond. The results signify the role of dark states for polariton fluctuations, and lead to a nonclassical counting statistics of emitted photons, which elaborates the role of the key parameters, e.g., pump, detuning, and temperature.

Observation of quantum depletion in a non-equilibrium exciton–polariton condensate

Maciej Pieczarka, Eliezer Estrecho, Maryam Boozarjmehr +9 more

He, is closely related to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) phenomenon. However, even at zero temperature, a fraction of the quantum liquid is excited out of the condensate into higher momentum states via interaction-induced fluctuations-the phenomenon of quantum depletion. Quantum depletion of atomic BECs in thermal equilibrium is well understood theoretically but is difficult to measure. This measurement is even more challenging in driven-dissipative exciton-polariton condensates, since their non-equilibrium nature is predicted to suppress quantum depletion. Here, we observe quantum depletion of a high-density exciton-polariton condensate by detecting the spectral branch of elementary excitations populated by this process. Analysis of this excitation branch shows that quantum depletion of exciton-polariton condensates can closely follow or strongly deviate from the equilibrium Bogoliubov theory, depending on the exciton fraction in an exciton polariton. Our results reveal beyond mean-field effects of exciton-polariton interactions and call for a deeper understanding of the relationship between equilibrium and non-equilibrium BECs.

Coherence Expansion and Polariton Condensate Formation in a Semiconductor Microcavity

V. V. Belykh, Nikolai N. Sibeldin, V. D. Kulakovskiĭ +6 more

The dynamics of the expansion of the first order spatial coherence g(1) for a polariton system in a high-Q GaAs microcavity was investigated on the basis of Young's double slit experiment under 3 ps pulse excitation at the conditions of polariton Bose-Einstein condensation. It was found that in the process of condensate formation the coherence expands with a constant velocity of about 10(8) cm/s. The measured coherence is smaller than that in a thermal equilibrium system during the growth of condensate density and well exceeds it at the end of condensate decay. The onset of spatial coherence is governed by polariton relaxation while condensate amplitude and phase fluctuations are not suppressed.
