Traces ofpth-order reduced density matrices: symmetric group approach

Abstract

This paper describes a general procedure for calculating the traces of reduced density matrices of any order p of an N -electron system, in the basis of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group , in a spin-free formalism. The numerical values of these traces are determined by useful formulae. This approach provides a suitable study of the N - and S -representability of the reduced density matrices.

Traces of spin-adapted reduced density matrices

E. Prez-Romero, Luis M. Tel, C. Valdemoro

The traces of the p-order reduced density matrices (p-RDM) split into independent contributions associated to the subsets of p-electron eigenstates of the Ŝ2 and Ŝz operators. Here, we report the partial traces for the blocks of the low-order RDMs corresponding to pure spin states of an N-electron system. A systematic method for calculating those of higher order RDMs is described and some useful relations are also given. All these relations which must be fulfilled independently by a RDM can be considered as N- and S-representability conditions © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Matrix elements of the third-order spin-adapted reduced Hamiltonian

Luis Laín, Alicia Torre, Jacek Karwowski +1 more

A formalism recently developed to obtain a matrix representation of the second-order spin-adapted reduced Hamiltonian [J. Karwowski, W. Duch, and C. Valdemoro, Phys. Rev. A 33, 2254 (1986)] and derived from the symmetric-group approach to configuration-interaction methods has been generalized to the case of the third-order spin-adapted reduced Hamiltonian. As in the second-order case, the matrix elements are linear combinations of generalized two-electron integrals with coefficients explicitly related to traces of products of the orbital occupation-number operators. The third-order spin-adapted reduced Hamiltonian matrix has been block diagonalized according to the irreducible representations of the symmetric group ${S}_{3}$.

Symmetric-group approach to the study of the traces ofp-order reduced-density operators and of products of these operators

Josep Planelles, Carmela Valdemoro, Jacek Karwowski

In this work we give the values of traces of p-order reduced-density operators. These traces are obtained by application of the spin functions and of the symmetric-group properties. The relations obtained here will allow an easy and fast evaluation of the high-order spin-adapted reduced Hamiltonian matrix elements and high-order Hamiltonian moments.

Approximatingq-order reduced density matrices in terms of the lower-order ones. I. General relations

Francisco Colmenero, C. Pérez del Valle, Carmela Valdemoro

The commutation-anticommutation relations of q-electron operators imply a set of N representability conditions [A. J. Coleman, Rev. Mod. Phys. 31, 668 (1963)] for the corresponding q-order reduced density matrices (q-RDM) [C. Valdemoro, An. Fis. 79, 95 (1983); in Structure, Interaction and Reactivity, edited by S. Fraga (Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1992)]. From these conditions, a general and closed-form relation is obtained here. In this equation the part involving RDM's has the same structure as that involving hole reduced density matrices. This relation is the basis of a method for approximating a q-RDM in terms of the r-RDM's [C. Valdemoro, Phys. Rev. A 45, 4462 (1992)] with rq. The derivation of this relation can be simplified significantly by employing a graph method which is described here. These graphs are in a one-to-one correspondence with the elements of the symmetric group of permutations.

Permutational Symmetry of Reduced Density Matrices

R. D. Poshusta

The usual restriction on the permutational symmetry of density matrices is removed. An Nth-order density matrix of general permutational symmetry is reduced and the symmetry of the resulting pth-order density matrix is found. This gives rise to necessary conditions for the N-representability of spin-free density matrices. We indicate the importance of these results for symmetry under the groups GL(n), U(n), and SU(n). We generalize the question of N-representability to the tensor algebra, where contraction of tensors plays the role of reduction of density matrices. Symmetry properties of the tensors are studied and density matrices are considered as special cases.
