Photon correlations of a sub-threshold optical parametric oscillator

Abstract

A microscopic multimode theory of collinear type-I spontaneous parametric downconversion in a cavity is presented. Single-mode and multimode correlation functions have been derived using fully quantized atom and electromagnetic field variables. From a first principles calculation the FWHM of the single-mode correlation function and the cavity enhancement factor have been obtained in terms of mirror reflectivities and the first-order crystal dispersion coefficient. The values obtained are in good agreement with recent experimental results [Phys. Rev. A 62 , 033804 (2000)].

Theory of photon-pair correlations in parametric downconversion in a microcavity

Roger Andrews, Edward Roy Pike, Sarben Sarkar

A theory of spontaneous parametric downconversion in a nonlinear crystal that is placed inside a microcavity in the degenerate, collinear, type I arrangement is given. Both atom and field variables are fully quantized. The photon-correlation function for the entangled photon pairs produced has a much longer correlation time (~0.4 ns) than that without the cavity (of the order of subpicoseconds) and can be measured directly with fast photodetectors. We also calculate the resonant suppression and enhancement in the photon-pair count rate as a function of cavity length. The results are in qualitative agreement with recent downconversion experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2556 (1999)] in a 4.5-mm cavity.

Theory of high gain cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Joanna A. Zielińska, Morgan W. Mitchell

We compute the output of multimode cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) for subthreshold, but otherwise arbitrary, gain. We find analytic Bogoliubov transformations that allow us to calculate arbitrary field correlation functions, including the second-order intensity correlation function ${G}^{(2)}(T)$. The results show evidence of increased coherence due to stimulated SPDC. We extend an earlier model [Lu and Ou, Phys. Rev. A 62, 033804 (2000)] to arbitrary gain and finesse, and show the extension gives accurate results in most scenarios. The results will allow simple, analytic description of cavity-based nonclassical light sources for quantum networking, quantum-enhanced sensing of atoms, and generation of highly nonclassical field states.

Theory of cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric downconversion

Yasser Jerónimo-Moreno, S. Rodriguez-Benavides, Alfred B. U’Ren

In this paper we study photon pairs generated in a nonlinear cavity composed of a nonlinear crystal surrounded by mirrors, by the process of spotaneous parametric downconversion. We analyze two different regimes: singly-resonant cavities where the signal and idler modes are resonant and doubly-resonant cavities where the pump mode is also resonant. We present analytic expressions for the joint spectral amplitude in these two cases and study the reduction in emission bandwidth as the cavity coefficient finesse is increased. We also study the enhancement of the source brightness from the presence of the cavity.

Quantum spatial correlations in the optical parametric oscillator with spherical mirrors

Luigi A. Lugiato, Irene Marzoli

We consider a quantum model for a degenerate optical parametric oscillator below threshold in a cavity with spherical mirrors. The spatial correlation function of a generic quadrature component of the signal field is calculated analytically in terms of an expansion over the Gauss-Laguerre modes. The critical behavior and the quantum image phenomenon, which emerge when threshold is approached, are described in detail. We calculate also the spatial correlation function of the intensity fluctuations, which can be more easily measured by direct detection and exhibits the same qualitative features.

Quantum theory of spontaneous emission in a one-dimensional optical cavity with two-side output coupling

Xiao-Ping Feng, Kikuo Ujihara

A quantum theory of spontaneous emission from an initially excited two-level atom in a one-dimensional optical cavity with output coupling from both sides is developed. Orthonormal mode functions with a continuous spectrum are employed, which are derived by imposing a periodic boundary condition on the whole space with a period much larger than the cavity length. The delay differential equation of the atomic state of Cook and Milonni [Phys. Rev. A 35, 5081 (1987)] is re-derived in a strict manner, where the reflectivity of the cavity mirrors is included naturally in the mode functions. An approximate solution at a single-resonant-mode limit shows the results of ``vacuum'' Rabi oscillation in an underdamped cavity and enhanced spontaneous emission rate in an overdamped cavity. For the latter case, it is found that in the optical range the spontaneous emission rate is enhanced by a factor F (finesse of the cavity).

Theory of photon statistics and squeezing in quantum interference of a sub-threshold parametric oscillator

Roger Andrews, Edward R. Pike, Sarben Sarkar

A multimode theory describing quantum interference of a subthreshold optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with a coherent local oscillator (LO) in a homodyne detection scheme is presented. Analytic expressions for the count rates in terms of the correlation time and relative phase difference between the LO and OPO have been derived. The spectrum of squeezing is also derived and the threshold for squeezing obtained in terms of the crystal nonlinearity and LO and OPO beam intensities.
