Abstract

We demonstrate a symmetric, single-spatial-mode, single-photon heralding efficiency of 84% for a type-II spontaneous parametric downconversion process. High-efficiency, single-spatial mode collection is key to enabling many quantum information processing and quantum metrology applications.

Lossless single-photon shaping via heralding

Kahraman G. Köprülü, Yu-Ping Huang, Geraldo A. Barbosa +1 more

Using spontaneous optical parametric downconversion, we experimentally demonstrate heralded generation of shaped single photons, whose modes are tailored indirectly by applying amplitude modulation on the pump field that drives the downconversion process. Our experiment opens a door to creating high-quality, mode-shaped single photons at a substantially higher efficiency than is possible with the existing method of direct single-photon shaping.

Correlation control for pure and efficiently generated heralded single photons

Jefferson Flórez, Omar Calderón-Losada, Alejandra Valencia +1 more

We present a detailed study on the properties of single photons generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) when both the spectral and spatial degrees of freedom are controlled by means of filters. Our results show that it is possible to obtain pure heralded single photons with high heralding efficiency despite the use of filters. Moreover, we report an asymmetry on the single-photon properties exhibited in type-II SPDC sources that depends on choosing the signal or the idler photon as the heralding one.

Highly efficient heralding of entangled single photons

Sven Ramelow, Alexandra Mech, Marissa Giustina +9 more

Single photons are an important prerequisite for a broad spectrum of quantum optical applications. We experimentally demonstrate a heralded single-photon source based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in collinear bulk optics, and fiber-coupled bolometric transition-edge sensors. Without correcting for background, losses, or detection inefficiencies, we measure an overall heralding efficiency of 83%. By violating a Bell inequality, we confirm the single-photon character and high-quality entanglement of our heralded single photons which, in combination with the high heralding efficiency, are a necessary ingredient for advanced quantum communication protocols such as one-sided device-independent quantum key distribution.

Efficient heralding of pure single-photons at telecom wavelength from pulsed cavity-enhanced SPDC

Highly efficient sources of pure single photons are essential for photonic quantum technologies. We present a source of pure single-photons with 85% heralding efficiency based on pulsed spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a monolithic cavity.
