Abstract

The contribution of the two-quantum photoeffect to the pulse amplitude distribution at the output of a photomultiplier is considered. An expression generalizing the Mandel formula is derived that takes into account the second-order photoeffect. The influence of a temporal and spatial coherency of the radiation field on the photomultiplier count statistics is studied. Possible applications of the obtained results to determining statistical characteristics of the optical fields are discussed.

Two-Photon Counting Statistics for Laser and Chaotic Radiation

Malvin Carl Teich, Paul Diament

The relation between the two-quantum photocounting distribution p(n, T) and the intensity fluctuations of the radiation incident on the detector is obtained and compared with the one-quantum results. The actual statistics are evaluated for several cases of interest, including a chaotic source, an amplitude-stabilized wave, and the output of a single-mode laser (Van der Pol oscillator). The two-quantum count rate 〈n〉/T is found to depend on the mean-square intensity of the radiation, in contrast to the one-quantum count rate which is proportional to the mean intensity. The effects of photon correlations in the radiation beam become apparent since the two-quantum distributions manifest a distinctly more positive second derivative than the corresponding one-quantum distributions. Both the low-and the high-count probabilities are therefore increased at the expense of counts near the mean. The quantum-theoretical treatment is found to be equivalent to the semiclassical treatment for density operators possessing a positive-definite weight function in the P-representation. Some possible experiments to verify the theory are discussed and shown to be feasible.

Influence of coherent properties of an optical field on the photocount statistics

В. Г. Астафуров, G. N. Glazov

The asymmetry of photocount statistics in respect of the spatial and temporal coherence factors is demonstrated and explained. This asymmetry appears because of the of a counter receiving a non-Poisson photoelectron flux. A statistical model of an optical field, photoelectron flux, and counting flux is used in a computer study of the dependences of the distributions and moments of the number of counts in a given time interval on the ratio of the coherence factors. An explanation of the features of these dependences is provided. A determination is made of the range of conditions in which the asymmetry is significant. In particular, the asymmetry disappears in the case of a Poisson photoelectron flux and for a very short dead time.

Photon Counting Probabilities in Quantum Optics

M. D. Srinivas, E. B. Davies

We reconsider various approaches to the quantum theory of photodetection from the point of view of the quantum theory of measurement, and show that important differences between them depend upon the manner in which they take into account the modification of the field distribution produced by the presence of the detector. We show that the Mandel photon counting formula may lead to unphysical results, such as negative probabilities, in some situations just because this modification is not incorporated into the model. We also show that the recently developed quantum theory of continuous measurements provides a completely satisfactory framework for discussing photon counting experiments. As an illustration, an exact derivation of the photon statistics of a single-mode free field is presented, and some of the results are shown to be identical to those derived earlier by Mollow and others. We also indicate how our approach can be extended to discuss the photon statistics of fields in interaction with sources and reservoirs.

ON THE DETERMINATION OF THE STATISTICAL PROPERTIES OF LIGHT FROM PHOTOELECTRIC MEASUREMENTS

J. PEf Ina

A relation is derived between the probability distribution of the integrated intensity of light incident on a photoelectric detector and that of the emission of n photoelectrons in a time interval (t, t + T) from the properties of a quantized electromagnetic field. Both the direct and the inverse relations are derived, thereby enabling the statistical properties of light to be determined from photoelectric measurements. An explicit expression is given for the coefficients for calculating the moments ( W k) by means of the moments (n J) (] = 1, 2 ..... k). The correctness of the operations in which generalized functions occur is confirmed by some direct calculations. The significance of photoelectric detectors has been increasing of late. Since their response is proportional to the intensity of incident light (to the square of the amplitude of light) (more exactly, to the local mean time value of the intensity), one speaks of quadratic detectors. These detectors are of basic importance in the theory of the coherence of the electromagnetic field, since if we place N such detectors into N different points in space and if we lead the outputs of these detectors to the correlator we can measure the correlation (coherence) effects of the 2N-th order in the given field [1]. Such correlation measurements provide information on the energy distribution in the radiation spectrum [2], the angular dimensions of stars [3], and the state of polarization [4] and also enable the phase of physically important functions (e.g. the scattering amplitudes) [5] to be determined. Although in such experiments the properties of photoelectrons are studied rather than of photons, they reflect the basic properties of photons. Let the probability distribution Of the emission of n photoelectrons in a time interval (t, t + T) be p(n, T, t) - p(n) and let the probability distribution of the quantity W(T, t) = W = J'tt+r I(t') dr', where I(t) is the intensity of linearly polarized light incident on the photodetector (for simplicity we assume that the sensitivity of the photocathode is a = 1), be P(W). The quantity W can be regarded as a classical characteristic of the field, the quantity n represents the quantum characteristic of the field. Then, on the basis of such a semi-classical description, in which the field is described classically, but its interaction is described quantum-wise, one can derive the following relation [6]

Application of the Functional Formalism to Investigation of the Photoelectric Counting Distribution

Andrzej Zardecki

A general formula is derived relating the generating function of the N-fold photoelectron counting distribution to the characteristic functional of the optical field. For a stationary Gaussian radiation field the generating function is expressed as an infinite product involving eigenvalues of a set of integral equations. The results of Bédard, Dialetis, and Cantrell are shown to hold as special cases. Addition of photoelectric counts from correlated Gaussian light is analyzed and the appropriate generating function is given.

Nondipole effects in the angular distribution of photoelectrons in two-photon two-color above-threshold atomic ionization

Alexei N. Grum-Grzhimailo, Грызлова Елена Владимировна

Expressions for the angular distribution of photoelectrons produced in two-photon two-color atomic ionization are obtained within the statistical tensor formalism, taking into account a full multipole expansion of the radiation in electric and magnetic moments. The general expressions are reduced to a simpler form for a particular geometry used in experiments with XUV + optical radiation beams and analyzed within the first-order nondipole corrections for different polarization states of the photons. As a numerical example, the Ne $1s$ above-threshold ionization by two-color radiation is considered within the second-order perturbation theory. A large forward-backward asymmetry in the photoelectron angular distribution is predicted.
