Optical collisions and saturated radiative transition rates

Gerard Nienhuis

The formal structure of the time dependence of the state of an atom in a perturber bath in an intense classical monochromatic radiation field is studied. The authors allow the cross sections of binary collisions to be affected by the radiation field. The result is used to derive an expression for the collision-broadened saturated fluorescence excitation spectrum and absorption rate in terms of a collisional relaxation operator. This operator can be related to the rate of collisionally aided radiative excitation.

Observation of Collisional Velocity Changes Associated with Atoms in a Superposition of Dissimilar Electronic States

THOMAS W. MOSSBERG, Ravinder Kachru, Sven R. Hartmann

Photon-echo measurements in atomic Na perturbed by He provide the first demonstration of the contribution of velocity-changing-like effects to the transverse relaxation of atoms in superposition of two states even when the states follow different post-collision trajectories. The apparent anomaly that broadening cross sections derived from either absorption line widths or photon-echo relaxation measurements are smaller than the total cross section for scattering of atoms in either pure state is explained.

Resonant absorption in stationary and nonstationary fields

V. Sethu Raman, Gerald J. Small

Response of a two-level atom, relaxing owing to strong thermalizing collisions, in a weak near-resonant pulsed radiation field is examined using the second order perturbation solution of the optical Bloch equations. Dependence of the rate of absorption on the collisional relaxation time of the atom, the correlation time, pulse width, and the degree of detuning of the incident field are discussed.
