Statistical mechanics of the 2D quantum XY model in a transverse field

Malte Henkel

Abstract

The 2D quantum XY model is introduced and the phase diagram is obtained. The model shows a paramagnetic, an ordered ferromagnetic and an ordered 'oscillatory' phase. The line of phase transitions, from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic phase is seen to be in the same universality class as the 3D Ising model. Along this line, critical exponents are v=0.629+or-0.002 and beta =0.324+or-0.009.

Finite-size scaling and universality in the spin-1 quantumXYchain

Walter Hofstetter, Malte Henkel

The spin-1 XY chain in a transverse field is studied using finite-size scaling. The ground-state phase diagram displays a paramagnetic, an ordered ferromagnetic and an ordered oscillatory phase. The paramagnetic - ferromagnetic transition line belongs to the universality class of the 2D Ising model. Along this line, universality is confirmed for the finite-size scaling functions of several correlation lengths and for the conformal operator content.

Phase Diagrams of One-Dimensional Ising and XY Models with Fully Connected Ferromagnetic and Anti-Ferromagnetic Quantum Fluctuations

Shuntaro Okada, Masayuki Ohzeki, Kazuyuki Tanaka

We analytically investigated the phase diagrams of one-dimensional Ising and XY models. A second-order phase transition occurs in both models only with the transverse magnetic field. In this study, the fully connected ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic XX interactions are applied in addition to the transverse magnetic field. The ferromagnetic XX interaction causes a first-order phase transition in both of the one-dimensional Ising and XY models. In contrast, by applying the anti-ferromagnetic one, the second-order phase transition can be avoided in the one-dimensional Ising model, and the critical amplitude becomes smaller in the one-dimensional XY model even though the second-order phase transition remains and the critical exponent does not change. Because the anti-ferromagnetic XX interaction works to destroy the order of the transverse magnetization, it begins to decrease at a larger strength of the transverse magnetic field. As a result, the susceptibility of the transverse magnetization with respect to the strength of the magnetic field becomes small. It is conjectured that the anti-ferromagnetic XX interaction is generally preferable to the ferromagnetic interaction to improve the performance of quantum annealing.

Quantum phase transitions of one-dimensional period-two anisotropic XY models in a transverse field

Song Jia-Li, Ming Zhong, Tong Pei-Qing

The quantum phase transitions of one-dimensional period-two anisotropic XY models in a transverse field with the Hamiltonian where the anisotropy parameters i take and alternately, are studied. The Hamiltonian can be reduced to the diagonal form by Jordan-Wigner and Bogoliubov transformations. The long-range correlations Cx and Cy are calculated numerically. The phase with Cx Cy0 (or Cy Cx0) is referred to as the ferromagnetic (FM) phase along the x (or y) direction, while the phase with Cx=Cy=0 is the paramagnetic (PM) phase. It is found that the phase diagrams with the ratio -1 and =-1 are different obviously. For the case with -1, the line h=hc1=1-[(1-)/2]2 separates an FM phase from a PM phase, while the line =0 is the boundary between a ferromagnetic phase along the x direction (FMx) and a ferromagnetic phase along the y direction (FMy). These are similar to those of the uniform XY chains in a transverse field (i.e., =1). When =-1, the FMx and FMy phases disappear and there appears a new FM phase. The line h=hc2=1-2 separates this new FM phase from the PM phase. The new phase is gapless with two zeros in single particle energy spectrum. This is due to the new symmetry in the system with =-1, i.e., the Hamiltonian is invariant under the transformation 2ix 2i+1y,2iy 2i+1x. The correlation function between the 2i-1 and 2i lattice points along the x (y) direction is equal to that between the 2i and 2i+1 lattice points along the y (x) direction. As a result, the long-range correlation functions along two directions are equivalent. In order to facilitate the description, we call this gapless phase the isotropic ferromagnetic (FMxx) phase. Finally, the relationship between quantum entanglement and quantum phase transitions of the system is studied. The scaling behaviour of the von Neumann entropy at each point in the FMxx phase is SL~1/3log2L+ Const, which is similar to that at the anisotropic phase transition point of the uniform XY model in a transverse field, and different from those in the FMx and FMy phases.

Quantum renormalization group of XYZ model in a transverse magnetic field

A. Langari

We have studied the zero-temperature phase diagram of $\mathrm{XYZ}$ model in the presence of transverse magnetic field. We show that small anisotropy $(0<~\ensuremath{\Delta}<1)$ is not relevant to change the universality class. The phase diagram consists of two antiferromagnetic ordering and a paramagnetic phase. We have obtained the critical exponents, fixed points, and running of coupling constants by implementing the standard quantum renormalization group. The continuous phase transition from antiferromagnetic (spin-flop) phase to a paramagnetic one is in the universality class of Ising model in transverse field. Numerical exact diagonalization has been done to justify our results. We have also addressed the application of our findings to the recent experiments on ${\mathrm{Cs}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoCl}}_{4}.$

Critical properties and phase diagram of the quantum anisotropic XY spin chain in a random magnetic field: A density-matrix renormalization-group analysis

Aušrius Juozapavičius, Laura Urba, S. Caprara +1 more

The spin-1/2 quantum anisotropic XY spin chain in a transverse random magnetic field parallel to the z axis is numerically studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group. The dependence of the spontaneous magnetization and the energy gap on both the strength of the random magnetic field and the factor of anisotropy is determined. The critical line for the order-disorder phase transition is obtained and the resulting phase diagram is drawn. Our results are compatible with the fact that models with different factors of anisotropy fall within the same universality class as the quantum Ising model in a transverse random field.

Nonequilibrium phases and phase transitions of the XY model

Tharnier O. Puel, Stefano Chesi, Stefan Kirchner +1 more

We obtain the steady-state phase diagram of a transverse-field XY spin chain coupled at its ends to magnetic reservoirs held at different magnetic potentials. In the long-time limit, the magnetization bias across the system generates a current-carrying nonequilibrium steady state. We characterize the different nonequilibrium phases as functions of the chain's parameters and magnetic potentials, in terms of their correlation functions and entanglement content. The mixed-order transition, previously observed for the case of a transverse-field Ising chain, is established to emerge as a generic feature of a wider class of out-of-equilibrium problems. The critical exponents associated with this universality class are determined analytically. Results are also contrasted with those obtained in the limit of Markovian reservoirs. Our findings should prove helpful in establishing the properties of nonequilibrium phases and phase transitions of extended open quantum systems.
