Abstract

The analytic solutions of equations, which describe the time behavior of density-matrix elements of a two-level medium driven by weak-probe tunable and strong fields, namely, scrE(t)=E(t)cos[\ensuremath{\omega}t+\ensuremath{\varphi}(t)]+\ensuremath{\varepsilon} cos[(\ensuremath{\omega}+\ensuremath{\delta})t], the amplitude E(t) and phase \ensuremath{\varphi}(t) of which are any arbitrary functions of time, are obtained. We obtain explicit expressions of the medium polarizability in two cases of the strong-field parameters modulation: first, E(t)=${\mathit{E}}_{0}$cos(\ensuremath{\xi} cos\ensuremath{\Omega}t), where ${\mathit{E}}_{0}$, \ensuremath{\Omega}, and \ensuremath{\xi} are constants, and \ensuremath{\varphi}=0; and second, both the amplitude E(t) and the phase \ensuremath{\varphi}(t) are periodic functions of time, and E(t)=C\ensuremath{\varphi}\ifmmode \dot{}\else \.{}\fi{}, where C is an arbitrary constant. These cases of modulation are generalizations of cases that were considered earlier. The first case of modulation causes a shift of the well-known Rabi resonances in the weak-probe absorption and dispersion spectra by the factor ${\mathit{J}}_{0}$(\ensuremath{\xi}) (${\mathit{J}}_{0}$ is the zero-order Bessel function of the first kind) in comparison with a nonmodulated exciting field. In the second case of the modulation, the Rabi resonances are present but the effect of such a modulation results in an attenuation of the amplitude-modulation effect. The values of the parameters ${\mathit{E}}_{0}$, \ensuremath{\Omega}, C, and \ensuremath{\xi} and the frequency ranges in which the weak-probe gain, caused by resonant Rayleigh scattering and by three-photon scattering, takes place are determined for these two cases of the modulation.

Absorption and dispersion spectra of a polychromatic field in a two-level medium driven by a strong polychromatic pumping field

Yu. A. Zinin, N. V. Sushilov

An analytic expression of the polarization induced by a polychromatic weak probe field in a two-level medium, driven by a strong polychromatic pumping field, is obtained. This expression allows one to obtain both the absorption and dispersion spectra at any frequency of a probe field. The numerically calculated graphs of the central-component probe-field absorption and dispersion spectra, depending on the pumping-field amplitude in the cases of the one-, two- three-, four-, and five-component pumping field, are presented. It is shown that when the probe-field detuning is close to the strong-field Rabi frequency, the absorption spectrum changes to the dispersionlike form, while the dispersion spectrum changes to the absorptionlike one.

Absorption and fluorescence in frequency-modulated fields under conditions of strong modulation and saturation

N. Nayak, G. S. Agarwal

The dynamical behavior of a two-level system in an intense frequency-modulated field is obtained without recourse to the weak-modulation assumption. Solutions to the optical Bloch equations are expressed in terms of continued fractions involving 2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2 matrices. Such matrix-continued fractions are numerically evaluated to obtain a wide variety of absorption and fluorescence spectra in frequency-modulated fields. Results in various special cases involving combinations of weak fields, weak modulation, strong modulation, and strong fields are given. Analytical results for weak fields but with an arbitrary degree of modulation are also presented. The spectra exhibit additional resonances for strong modulation. The main resonance shifts and broadens considerably due to strong modulation and saturation effects.

Effects of propagation on three-wave mixing spectroscopy

Dandan Guo, Murray Sargent

We study unidirectional three-wave spectroscopy for which one pump and two probe waves beat in a nonlinear medium at the frequencies ±Δ with respect to the pump. Field transmission spectra change as the fields propagate through the medium due to probe variations in both amplitude and phase. In a homogeneously broadened two-level system, the rates of change in sidemode amplitudes and phases are determined by the effectiveness of the population pulsations in coupling the fields. For cases in which the population difference lifetime T1 is comparable with the dipole lifetime T2, the strong coupling between the sidemodes and the pump leads to fast amplitude change, while strong coupling between the two sidemodes leads to fast phase change. When the pump Rabi flopping frequency Ω ≅ Δ and Δ ≅ 1/T1, the population pulsations couple the two sidemodes most efficiently, causing the sidemode phases relative to the pump phase to vary rapidly. When Ω ≅ 2Δ, the pump field scatters strongly off the population pulsations, thereby amplifying the sidemode fields. When Ω ≫ Δ, the population pulsations become too weak to couple the fields significantly, and phase, amplitude, and spectral features in general change very slowly.

Anomalous spectral response and propagationl instability for pump-probe propagation in a two-level medium

Michael E. Crenshaw, C. M. Bowden

We investigated the sideband instability by numerical integration of the Maxwell-Bloch equations for propagation of a nearly resonant pump laser and a weak probe laser in a system of two-level atoms. In an optically thick medium, the probe gain (absorption) spectrum becomes a function of propagation distance. We find that the well-known gain resonance at the generalized Rabi frequency Ω' is suppressed and a broad asymmetric gain region forms on each side of the laser frequency. For probe-pump detunings inside these gain regions, the field envelope breaks up into periodic traveling waves that are compared to the polycnoidal solutions of the sine-Gordon equation with periodic boundary conditions.

Weak-probe absorption and dispersion spectra in a two-level system driven by a strong trichromatic field

А. В. Алексеев, А. В. Давыдов, N. V. Sushilov +1 more

With the help of a probe-field method the time-behaviour of a two-level system subjected to a strong trichromatic near-resonant field is studied. The suitable Bloch equations are solved by a matrix exponent method which allows us to do without the continued fractions. It is shown that, when the Rabi frequency is sufficiently large, the profile of the weak-probe field absorption resembles a dispersion profile. The existence of a new type of parametric resonances not connected with the Rabi resonances is shown.

Frequency-modulated spectra of coherently driven systems

G. S. Agarwal

Frequency-modulated spectra of coherently driven quantum systems are calculated using the density-matrix formulation. The modulated spectra are shown to be related to the two-time correlation functions of the polarization operators of the system. In the limit of modulation frequencies small compared to the width of the spectral features under study, the in-phase signal (quadrature signal) is shown to be related to the derivative of absorption (second derivative of dispersion) in the absence of any modulation. Modulation spectra in strong fields are calculated explicitly for two-level systems; such spectra are shown to yield useful information concerning light shifts and Rabi splittings. The influence of laser temporal fluctuations on such modulation spectra is also discussed.
