Precision Lamb-shift measurement in the n=2 state of Li2+6

Abstract

A microwave-optical-pulsing and trapping technique has been employed to observe Lamb-shift ($\mathcal{S}=2{S}_{\frac{1}{2}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2{P}_{\frac{1}{2}}$) transitions in $^{6}\mathrm{Li}^{2+}$. Microwave transitions were induced in trapped metastable ${\mathrm{Li}}^{2+}(2{S}_{\frac{1}{2}})$ ions produced beforehand by a pulsed electron beam incident upon a low-pressure lithium vapor. Resonances were observed in the soft x-ray decay light as an applied magnetic field was swept through the Zeeman transition frequency. Computer fitting of 76 line centers yields $\mathcal{S}=62765\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}21$ MHz, in good agreement with theory.

He+ Lamb-shift measurement by the quenching-radiation anisotropy method

G. W. F. Drake, S. P. Goldman, Adriaan J. van Wijngaarden

The Lamb shift of ${\mathrm{He}}^{+}$ is derived from the measured anisotropy in the electric-field-induced quenching radiation of the metastable $2{s}_{\frac{1}{2}}$ state. The results demonstrate that the anisotropy method can be applied with high precision to one-electron ion beams, as well as neutral beams. We find a Lamb shift of 14040.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.9 MHz (1 standard deviation). The sources of error and difficulties encountered in working with ion beams are discussed in detail.

Precision measurement of the ground-state hyperfine constant for $^9Be^+$ in a linear Paul trap via magnetically insensitive hyperfine transitions

Ao Zhi-Yuan, Wenli Bai, Qian-yu Zhang +2 more

Direct measurements of the ground-state magnetically insensitive hyperfine transition |F=2,mF=0>->|F=1,mF=0> of $^9Be^+$ ions have been performed using microwave-driven state transfer. The $^9Be^+$ ions are confined and laser-cooled in a linear Paul trap, forming a Coulomb crystal. The transition frequencies have been measured over a magnetic field range of $ \pm 0.5 mT $ centered at zero magnetic field, and the acquired data were fitted accounting for the high-order Zeeman effect. The hyperfine constant A is determined to be -625.008840(35) MHz, achieving a relative precision of $ 5.6 \times 10^{-8}$.

Precision measurement of the Mg+25 ground-state hyperfine constant

Zhilin Xu, Ke Deng, H. Che +3 more

We report an experimental determination of the ground-state hyperfine constant $A$ of the $^{25}\mathrm{Mg}^{+}$ ions by measuring the $|{S}_{1/2},F=2,m=0\ensuremath{\rangle}$ to $|{S}_{1/2},F=3,m=0\ensuremath{\rangle}$ transition (0-0 transition) frequency of the two ground-state hyperfine energy levels. The frequency is measured by rf resonant method in a Paul trap under a magnetic field of about 0.1 mT. The result is $A=\ensuremath{-}596.254$ 248 7(42) MHz. Different frequency shifts and uncertainties are evaluated. The main effect is quadratic Zeeman shift. Since the Paul trap is driven by rf on the electrodes, ac magnetic field can be induced by the rf at the site of the ion. The ac magnetic field causes quadratic Zeeman shift for ion frequency standards and also reduces the coherence time when the ion acts as a quantum bit. Precision measurement of this ac magnetic field can help evaluating the related uncertainty when a single-ion optical clock is established on the trap.

rf Spectroscopy with a Single Ba+ Ion

Timo Koerber, M. Schacht, Kristi R. G. Hendrickson +2 more

We have employed the method of shelving to measure Zeeman resonances of a single trapped Ba+ ion. We use optical pumping to place the ion in a selected magnetic sublevel of either the 6S(1/2) ground state or the 5D(3/2) metastable state. The ion is exposed to an rf field, and a probing/shelving mechanism detects whether spin-flip transitions have taken place. We have observed rf transitions with linewidths of 15 Hz, limited by magnetic-field noise. We have also observed the shift in the Zeeman frequency when the ion is illuminated by off-resonant light. A simultaneous measurement of such light shifts in two atomic states of Ba+ will permit a precise determination of the ratio of transition matrix elements.

Precision measurement of the light shift of Mg+25 ions

W. H. Yuan, Ke Deng, Z. Y. Ma +5 more

We calculate the polarizabilities of the Zeeman sublevels of $^{25}\mathrm{Mg}^{+}$ ion hyperfine ground states. To verify the calculation result, a single $^{25}\mathrm{Mg}^{+}$ ion is trapped in a Paul trap and a microwave resonance measurement is carried out on the ground states with and without the light shift. A good agreement between the experimental result and the calculation result is obtained.
