In this paper, we derive analytically the dynamical laws of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (CGPEs) without/with an angular momentum rotation term and an external magnetic field for modelling nonrotating/rotating spin-1 Bose-Eintein condensates. We prove the conservation of the angular momentum expectation when the external trapping potential is radially symmetric in two dimensions and cylindrically symmetric in three dimensions; obtain a system of first order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the dynamics of the density of each component and solve the ODEs analytically in a few cases; derive a second order ODE for the dynamics of the condensate width and show that it is a periodic function without/with a perturbation; construct the analytical solution of the CGPEs when the initial data is chosen as a stationary state with its centerof-mass shifted away from the external trap center. Finally, these dynamical laws are confirmed by the direct numerical simulation results of the CGPEs.

We study analytically and asymptotically, as well as numerically, ground states and dynamics of two-component spin-orbit-coupled Bose--Einstein condensates (BECs) modeled by the coupled Gross--Pitaevskii equations (CGPEs). In fact, due to the appearance of the spin-orbit (SO) coupling in the two-component BEC with a Raman coupling, the ground state structures and dynamical properties become very rich and complicated. For the ground states, we establish existence and nonexistence results under different parameter regimes and obtain their limiting behaviors and/or structures with different combinations of the SO and Raman coupling strengths. For the dynamics, we show that the motion of the center-of-mass is either nonperiodic or with different frequency than the trapping frequency when the external trapping potential is taken as harmonic and/or the initial data is chosen as a stationary state (e.g., ground state) with a shift, which is completely different from the case of a two-component BEC without the SO coupling, and obtain the semiclassical limit of the CGPEs in the linear case via the Wigner transform method. Efficient and accurate numerical methods are proposed for computing the ground states and dynamics, especially for the case of box potentials. Numerical results are reported to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the numerical methods and show the rich phenomenon in the SO-coupled BECs.

In this paper, we study the dynamics of rotating Bose--Einstein condensates (BEC) based on the Gross--Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with an angular momentum rotation term and present an efficient and accurate algorithm for numerical simulations. We examine the conservation of the angular momentum expectation and the condensate width and analyze the dynamics of a stationary state with a shift in its center. By formulating the equation in either the two-dimensional polar coordinate system or the three-dimensional cylindrical coordinate system, the angular momentum rotation term becomes a term with constant coefficients. This allows us to develop an efficient time-splitting method which is time reversible, unconditionally stable, efficient, and accurate for the problem. Moreover, it conserves the position density. We also apply the numerical method to study issues such as the stability of central vortex states and the quantized vortex lattice dynamics in rotating BEC.
We propose a simple, efficient and accurate numerical method for simulating the dynamics of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a rotational frame with/without a long-range dipole-dipole interaction. We begin with the three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with an angular momentum rotation term and/or long-range dipole-dipole interaction, state the two-dimensional (2D) GPE obtained from the 3D GPE via dimension reduction under anisotropic external potential and review some dynamical laws related to the 2D and 3D GPE. By introducing a rotating Lagrangian coordinate system, the original GPEs are re-formulated to GPEs without the angular momentum rotation which is replaced by a time-dependent potential in the new coordinate system. We then cast the conserved quantities and dynamical laws in the new rotating Lagrangian coordinates. Based on the new formulation of the GPE for rotating BECs in the rotating Lagrangian coordinates, a time-splitting spectral method is presented for computing the dynamics of rotating BECs. The new numerical method is explicit, simple to implement, unconditionally stable and very efficient in computation. It is spectral order accurate in space and second-order accurate in time, and conserves the mass in the discrete level. Extensive numerical results are reported to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the new numerical method. Finally, the numerical method is applied to test the dynamical laws of rotating BECs such as the dynamics of condensate width, angular momentum expectation and center-of-mass, and to investigate numerically the dynamics and interaction of quantized vortex lattices in rotating BECs without/with the long-range dipole-dipole interaction.
The achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in ultracold vapors of alkali atoms has given enormous impulse to the theoretical and experimental study of dilute atomic gases in condensed quantum states inside magnetic traps and optical lattices. This article offers a short survey on mathematical models and theories as well as numerical methods for BEC based on the mean field theory. We start with the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) in three dimensions (3D) for modeling one-component BEC of the weakly interacting bosons, scale it to obtain a three-parameter model and show how to reduce it to two dimensions (2D) and one dimension (1D) GPEs in certain limiting regimes. Mathematical theories and numerical methods for ground states and dynamics of BEC are provided. Extensions to GPE with an angular momentum rotation term for a rotating BEC, to GPE with long-range anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction for a dipolar BEC and to coupled GPEs for spin-orbit coupled BECs are discussed. Finally, some conclusions are drawn and future research perspectives are discussed.
The dynamics and interaction of quantized vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are investigated by using the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with/without an angular momentum rotation term. If all vortices have the same winding number, they would rotate around the trap center but never collide. In contrast, if the winding numbers are different, their interaction highly depends on the initial distance between vortex centers. The analytical results are presented to describe the dynamics of the vortex centers when β=0. While if β≠0, there is no analytical result but some conclusive numerical findings are provided for the further understanding of vortex interaction in BECs. Finally, the dynamic laws describing the relation of vortex interaction in nonrotating and rotating BECs are presented.
