Photon statistics in multiphoton absorption and emission processes

Muhammad Suhail Zubairy, J. J. Yeh

Exact solutions of the master equations which describe single-mode $m$-photon absorption and $m$-photon emission processes in a two-level atomic system are obtained using a density-matrix approach. Some aspects of the photon statistics, e.g., antibunching, are discussed.

Single-photon stimulated radiative interactions are universally symmetric relative to emission and absorption. We point out that certain multiphoton stimulated processes, whose completion is dependent on the spontaneous emission of at least one photon, do not behave analogously. The broken symmetry found in such cases invalidates simple correlations between population inversion and laser gain.

Exact solutions of the master equations which describe single-mode mmm-photon absorption and mmm-photon emission processes in a two-level atomic system are obtained using a density-matrix approach. Some aspects of the photon statistics, e.g., antibunching, are discussed.
