Abstract

We present direct spectroscopic measurement of the excited state angular-momentum-state distribution of ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}^{*}(3{}^{2}{S}_{1/2}+3{}^{2}{P}_{3/2})$ molecules photoassociated by the trapping lasers in a sodium magneto-optical trap. We find that states with quantum numbers up to $J=22$ are excited and that the measured population distribution can be well described using a local equilibrium model.

Model-independent measurements of the sodium magneto-optical trap's excited-state population

Jonathan M. Kwolek, D. S. Goodman, Samuel Entner +3 more

We present model-independent measurements of the excited-state population of atoms in a sodium (Na) magneto-optical trap (MOT) using a hybrid ion-neutral trap composed of a MOT and a linear Paul trap (LPT). We photoionize excited Na atoms trapped in the MOT and use two independent methods to measure the resulting ions: directly by trapping them in our LPT, and indirectly by monitoring changes in MOT fluorescence. By measuring the ionization rate via these two independent methods, we have enough information to directly determine the population of MOT atoms in the excited state. The resulting measurement reveals that there is a range of trapping-laser intensities where the excited-state population of atoms in our MOT follows the standard two-level model intensity dependence. However, an experimentally determined effective saturation intensity must be used instead of the theoretically predicted value from the two-level model. We measured the effective saturation intensity to be ${I}_{\mathrm{SE}}=22.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5.1\phantom{\rule{0.222222em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mW}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ for the type-I Na MOT and ${I}_{\mathrm{SE}}=49\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}11\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mW}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ for the type-II Na MOT, approximately 1.7 and 3.6 times the theoretical estimate, respectively. Lastly, at large trapping-laser intensities, our experiment reveals a clear departure from the two-level model at a critical intensity that we believe is due to a state-mixing effect, the critical intensity of which can be determined by a simple power broadening model.

Photoassociative Ionization of Heteronuclear Molecules in a Novel Two-Species Magneto-optical Trap

James P. Shaffer, Witek Chalupczak, N. P. Bigelow

We describe the experimental observation of ultracold ${\mathrm{NaCs}}^{+}$ molecular formation in a novel two-species magneto-optical trap. We interpret our observations in terms of a photoassociative ionization pathway similar to that observed in a sodium trap: $\mathrm{Na}+\mathrm{Cs}+\ensuremath{\Elzxh}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{Na}}+\ensuremath{\Elzxh}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{Cs}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\mathrm{NaCs}}^{+}{+e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. We have directly measured the ${\mathrm{NaCs}}^{+}$ production rate as a function of the excitation laser frequency and intensity elucidating the role of ground-state hyperfine levels. We have observed resonance structures in the frequency-dependent ion rate which we associate with the molecular character of the process.

Analysis of Experimental Production of Photonic Molecules of Sodium in a Magneto Optical Trap

Franklin J. Vivanco, Rafael Rothganger de Paiva, Edwin Pedrozo-Peñafiel +2 more

A experimental setup for the study of the sodium Na2+ molecule is presented. This molecular bond states are formed in the presence of light by photoassociation ionization (PAI). The pair of sodium atoms in the ground state absorbs two photons forming the photonic molecule.

Single-color photoassociative ionization of ultracold sodium: The region from 0 to -5 GHz

Arjen Amelink, K. M. Jones, Paul D. Lett +2 more

We have measured the rate of production of ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}^{+}$ ions in collisions of ultracold Na atoms held in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) as a function of probe laser detuning using a single-color probe beam. The ion rate is measured with the atoms mainly in the $3S(f=2)$ level (``bright MOT'') or the $3S(f=1)$ level (``dark MOT''). Using recent experimental information about the doubly excited autoionizing states of ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2},$ we find that the large structures in the first 5 GHz red of the atomic transition frequency are due to a doubly resonant excitation process with levels in the ${0}_{g}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ potential (asymptotically connected to ${3S}_{1/2}{+3P}_{3/2})$ as the intermediate states, and levels in the ${0}_{u}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${1}_{u}$ potentials (asymptotically connected to ${3P}_{3/2}{+3P}_{3/2})$ as the final autoionizing states. We can account for nearly all of the observed structure in this region of the spectra for both the bright and dark MOT.

Long-Range Predissociation in Two-Color Photoassociation of Ultracold Na Atoms

Peter Molenaar, P. van der Straten, H G M Heideman

We report two-color photoassociative ionization of sodium in a magneto-optical trap. The experimental results yield information on both singly and doubly excited states. We find that the highest bound vibrational levels ( $v>20$) of the singly excited ${0}_{g}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state predissociate into the ${3}^{2}{P}_{3/2}{+3}^{2}{S}_{1/2}({F}_{g}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1)$ dissociation continuum due to avoided crossings of the hyperfine components of this potential with other molecular symmetries. Based on symmetry and energy consideration we argue that a doubly excited ${1}_{u}$ state remains autoionizing even when excited only a few GHz above the dissociation continuum.
