Abstract

An investigation was made of the feasibility of reaching the quantum limit of the sensitivity of a projection system with a brightness amplifier, including a laser amplifier and a phase-conjugating mirror. A sensitivity of about 5 photons per resolution element was achieved in the near infrared (λ = 1.06 μm) when the number of elements in the field of view was ~ 350 × 350.

Threshold sensitivity of a projection optical system based on a brightness amplifier with a four-wave hypersonic phase-conjugating mirror under absolute instability conditions

Oleg V. Kulagin, Guerman A. Pasmanik, P B Potlov +1 more

The threshold (maximum) sensitivity was achieved experimentally for a projection system comprising a highly sensitive four-wave hypersonic phase-conjugating mirror and optical quantum amplifiers. The sensitivity at λ = 1.054 μm amounted to 4.8 × 10 − 19 J (2.4 photons) per resolution element. The results obtained were confirmed by theoretical estimates.

Amplification and phase conjugation of weak signals

Oleg V. Kulagin, Guerman A. Pasmanik, Alexander A. Shilov

The results of the study on phase conjugation of weak optical signals with an energy of several photons are considered. Basic concepts of a semi-classical theoretical approach to describe amplification and phase conjugation (PC) of such signals are presented. A review is given of the experimental investigations that allowed reaching a limiting (about 1 photon per mode) sensitivity of optical systems with PC-mirrors for a large (~105) number of resolution elements. High-sensitivity PC-mirror optical systems are demonstrated for a variety of applications.

Some applications of a high-sensitivity optical projection system in physical experiments

Oleg V. Kulagin, Guerman A. Pasmanik, P B Potlov +1 more

An experimental investigation was made of some potential applications, in physical experiments, of a high-sensitivity system for amplification and phase conjugation of weak optical radiation. The results demonstrated, in particular, the feasibility of recording the spatial structure of radiation experiencing spontaneous scattering in various media and a study was made of interference of weak optical beams with a complex transverse structure.

Phase conjugation of single photons

N. F. Andreev, V. I. Bespalov, M. A. Dvoretskii +1 more

Phase conjugation (PC) of extremely weak signals using a phase-conjugate mirror based on Mandelstam-Brillouin-enhanced four-wave mixing, coupled with an optical quantum amplifier, is considered. PC of a pulse with energy 4*10/sup -17/ J is achieved. PC conditions for amplified superluminescence noise of the optical quantum amplifier are specified and the limiting parameters are estimated. It is shown experimentally that if the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) is equal to unity, the energy of an input signal for which phase conjugation is possible corresponds to 30 photons per transverse mode.>

Phase-sensitive above-threshold laser amplifiers

Yi Mu, Craig M. Savage

We present a quantum-mechanical analysis of an above-threshold laser amplifier made phase sensitive by an injected field. The gain and noise are calculated in a high-Q cavity with four-level atoms as the lasing medium. We find that for coherent-state inputs this amplifier can preserve the signal-to-noise ratio thus achieving the theoretical best noise performance.
