Abstract

Subnatural linewidth in an optical transition in Cs was obtained by the suppression and recovery of the trapping of atoms. Cold Cs atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) were irradiated using a weak probe laser to suppress MOT loading. When a counterpropagating coupling laser was directed to be resonant with the upper transition, the probe laser was induced to transmit and the MOT loading was recovered. This work investigates quantitatively this behavior by applying simulated electromagnetically induced transparency, taking into account the linewidth of the lasers as a decoherence source.

Observation of the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Dispersion-like Structure in Trapped Cs Atoms

Kyoung-Dae Kim, Mi-Rang Kwon, Jung Bog Kim +1 more

We report experiemtnal results demonstrating the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in trapped Cs atoms. EIT occurs at the Λ-type configuration where the re0-pumping laser simultaneously plays a role as the coupling laser in the presence of a magneto-optical trapping and weak magnetic fields. Dependences of EIT signal on both the intensity and the detuning of the coupling laser were investigated. Linear absorption spectra for cold cesium atoms in the magneto-optical trap have been observed and shown the pronounced dispersion-like structure with sub-natural linewidth of 1 MHz due to the cooling laser.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in cold rubidium atoms

Min Yan, Edward G. Rickey, Yifu Zhu

We report experimental studies of electromagnetically induced transparency in Λ-type and ladder-type atomic systems realized in 87Rb atoms cooled and confined in a magneto-optical trap. Complete transparency is observed in the Λ-type system with a moderate coupling field. Comparison between the two systems reveals that at the line center of a weak probe transition, destructive interference occurs for the Λ-type system, whereas constructive interference occurs for the ladder-type system. We discuss conditions of complete transparency in the Λ-type system that contains hyperfine magnetic sublevels. Our experimental measurements for the two systems agree with theoretical calculations based on simple three-level Λ-type and ladder-type models.

Raman Spectroscopy of Cesium Atoms in a Laser Trap

D Grison, Brahim Lounis, Ch Salomon +2 more

Cold cesium atoms in a magneto-optical trap are probed by an additional weak laser beam. Resonances having a subnatural linewidth are observed on the probe beam absorption when the probe frequency is scanned about the trapping beam frequency. These resonances are interpreted in terms of stimulated Raman processes. They provide information on the internal as well as external states of the atoms in the trap.

Population relaxation of Cs atoms in MOT [frequency standard applications]

Atsushi Hasegawa, Kentaro Fukuda, T. Suzuki +3 more

The dynamical behavior of magneto-optically trapped (MOT) Cs atoms is studied by a laser-spectroscopic method. Atoms in the region irradiated by a pulsed laser beam are ejected from the MOT. Recovery of the local population appears in the absorption signals of a probe laser while total population is observed as a fluorescence signal. Anomalously large absorption is observed just after the pulse irradiation.

Absorption spectroscopy of cold caesium atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap

闫树斌 Yan Shubin, Tao Liu, Tao Geng +3 more

Absorption spectra of cold caesium atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap are measured around D 2 line at 852nm with a weak probe beam. Absorption reduction dip due to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect induced by the cooling/trapping field in a V-type three-level system and a gain peak near the cycling transition are clearly observed. Several mechanisms mixed with EIT effect in a normal V-type three-level system are briefly discussed. A simple theoretical analysis based on a dressed-state model is presented for interpretation of the absorption spectra.

Suppression of two-photon absorption by quantum interference

Min Yan, Edward G. Rickey, Y. Zhu

Summary form only given. Linear and nonlinear atomic response can be manipulated by quantum interference in an atomic medium in which electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is created by a coherent coupling field. Recently Agarwal and Harshawardhan showed that two-photon absorption may be enhanced or suppressed by quantum interference in a ladder-type atomic system (Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 77, p. 1039, 1996). We report an experimental demonstration of two-photon suppression by quantum interference in /sup 87/Rb atoms cooled and confined in a magneto-optical trap (MOT).
