Abstract

The harmonic oscillator with time-dependent parameters covers a broad spectrum of physical problems from quantum transport, quantum optics, and quantum information to cosmology. Several methods have been developed to quantize this fundamental system, such as the path integral method, the Lewis–Riesenfeld time invariant method, the evolution operator or dynamical symmetry method, etc. In all these methods, solution of the quantum problem is given in terms of the classical one. However, only few exactly solvable problems of the last one, such as the damped oscillator or the Caldirola–Kanai model, have been treated. The goal of the present paper is to introduce a wide class of exactly solvable quantum models in terms of the Sturm–Liouville problem for classical orthogonal polynomials. This allows us to solve exactly the corresponding quantum parametric oscillators with specific damping and frequency dependence, which can be considered as quantum Sturm–Liouville problems.

A class of exactly solved time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillators

Sang Pyo Kim

We consider a class of time-dependent harmonic oscillators, H(t)=p 2 /2mt alpha + m omega 2 t b q 2 /2, whose mass and frequency vary as non-negative powers of time. Classically they describe damping oscillators slowly decaying as negative powers of time. Using the connection between classical and quantum harmonic oscillators we find analytically the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants, obtain the exact quantum states, and compare these with the Caldirola-Kanai oscillator.

Exactly solvable Hermite, Laguerre, and Jacobi type quantum parametric oscillators

Şirin A. Büyükaşık, Zehra Çayiç

We introduce exactly solvable quantum parametric oscillators, which are generalizations of the quantum problems related with the classical orthogonal polynomials of Hermite, Laguerre, and Jacobi type, introduced in the work of Büyükaşık et al. [J. Math. Phys. 50, 072102 (2009)]. Quantization of these models with specific damping, frequency, and external forces is obtained using the Wei-Norman Lie algebraic approach. This determines the evolution operator exactly in terms of two linearly independent homogeneous solutions and a particular solution of the corresponding classical equation of motion. Then, time-evolution of wave functions and coherent states are found explicitly. Probability densities, expectation values, and uncertainty relations are evaluated and their properties are investigated under the influence of the external terms.

Time-dependent diffeomorphisms as quantum canonical transformations and the time-dependent harmonic oscillator

Ali Mostafazadeh

Quantum canonical transformations corresponding to time-dependent diffeomorphisms of the configuration space are studied. A special class of these transformations which correspond to time-dependent dilatations is used to identify a previously unknown class of exactly solvable time-dependent harmonic oscillators. The Caldirola-Kanai oscillator belongs to this class. For a general time-dependent harmonic oscillator, it is shown that choosing the dilatation parameter to satisfy the classical equation of motion, one obtains the solution of the Schrödinger equation. A simple generalization of this result leads to the reduction of the Schrödinger equation to a second-order ordinary differential equation whose special case is the auxiliary equation of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory. The time-evolution operator is expressed in terms of a positive real solution of this equation in a closed form, and the time-dependent position and momentum operators are calculated.

Time-dependent coupled harmonic oscillators: Classical and quantum solutions

D. X. Macedo, I. Guedes

In this work we present the classical and quantum solutions for an arbitrary system of time-dependent coupled harmonic oscillators, where the masses (m), frequencies (ω) and coupling parameter (k) are functions of time. To obtain the classical solutions, we use a coordinate and momentum transformations along with a canonical transformation to write the original Hamiltonian as the sum of two Hamiltonians of uncoupled harmonic oscillators with modified time-dependent frequencies and unitary masses. To obtain the exact quantum solutions we use a unitary transformation and the Lewis and Riesenfeld (LR) invariant method. The exact wave functions are obtained by solving the respective Milne–Pinney (MP) equation for each system. We obtain the solutions for the system with m1 = m2 = m0eγt, ω1 = ω01e-γt/2, ω2 = ω02e-γt/2 and k = k0.

Exact Solutions for Time-Dependent Non-Hermitian Oscillators: Classical and Quantum Pictures

Kevin Zelaya, Óscar Rosas-Ortiz

We associate the stationary harmonic oscillator with time-dependent systems exhibiting non-Hermiticity by means of point transformations. The new systems are exactly solvable, with all-real spectra, and transit to the Hermitian configuration for the appropriate values of the involved parameters. We provide a concrete generalization of the Swanson oscillator that includes the Caldirola–Kanai model as a particular case. Explicit solutions are given in both the classical and quantum pictures.

Harmonic oscillators coupled time-dependent

Diego Ximenes Macedo

In this work we present the classical and quantum solutions of time-dependent coupled harmonic oscillators. In these systems the masses, frequencies and coupling parameter (k) are functions of time. Four systems are investigated. To obtain the classical solutions we use a coordinate and momentum transformations along with a canonical transformation to write the original Hamiltonian as the sum of two Hamiltonians of uncoupled harmonic oscillators with modified time-dependent frequencies and unitary masses. We find the analytical expression for position and velocity of each oscillator of the systems. To obtain the exact quantum solutions we use a unitary transformation and the Lewis and Riesenfeld invariant method. The wave functions obtained are written in terms of a c-number quantity () which is solution of the Milne-Pinney equation. For each system we solve the respective Milne-Pinney equation and discuss how the quantum fluctuations and the uncertainty product evolve with time.
