Bulk and surface critical behaviour at the conformal invariant point in the Z5model

Abstract

The author determines the bulk, thermal and magnetic exponents at the conformal invariant point in the Z 5 model with a Monte Carlo based finite-size calculation. The results are in good agreement with the predictions of Zamolodchikov and Fateev (1985). The author also argues that the (N-1) surface magnetic exponents x h (j) in the Z n model are given by j(N-j)/N (j=1, . . ., N-1). This prediction is also verified in a Monte Carlo finite-size calculation for the Z 5 model.

Conformal invariance, finite-size scaling and surface magnetic exponent of the Potts model in two dimensions

Carlo Vanderzande, Attilio L. Stella

The analysis of renormalisation group equations for the q-state Potts model in two dimensions is generalised to include the presence of a surface field H s besides the bulk one, H B . Combined with conformal invariance results, this allows prediction of a surface susceptibility behaviour delta 2/f delta H s delta H B approximately L -1/8 (1-C'lnL) 15/16 for a q=4 system of size L at the critical temperature. This prediction is checked by a Monte Carlo based finite-size scaling analysis, which also nicely reproduces the exact and conjectured magnetic surface exponents for q=2 and 3, respectively. For the Baxter-Wu model similar methods give results consistent with the q=4 behaviour without logarithmic corrections (c'=0).

The critical behaviour of self-dual Z(N) spin systems: finite-size scaling and conformal invariance

Francisco Castilho Alcaraz

This paper is concerned with the critical properties of a family of self-dual two-dimensional Z(N) models whose bulk free energy is exactly known at the self-dual point. The author's analysis is performed by studying the finite-size behaviour of the corresponding one-dimensional quantum Hamiltonians which also possess an exact solution at their self-dual point. By exploring finite-size scaling ideas and the conformal invariance of the critical infinite system the author calculates, for N up to 8, the critical temperature and critical exponents as well as the central charge associated with the underlying conformal algebra. The results strongly suggest that the Z(N) quantum field theory of Zamolodchikov and Fateev is the underlying field theory associated with these statistical mechanical systems. The author also tests for the Z(5) case, the conjecture that these models correspond to the bifurcation points in the phase diagram of the General Z(N) spin model, where a massless phase originates.

Finite size scaling approach to surface critical phenomena

Michel Droz, Anna‐Sapfo Malaspinas, Attilio L. Stella

An extended finite-size scaling approach which allows the authors to treat simultaneously both bulk and surface properties is presented. The method is tested on the two-dimensional Ising model. The bulk and surface magnetic exponents, are also estimated for the two-dimensional q-states Potts model, with q=3 and 4. For q=3, the value obtained for the surface magnetic exponent supports a recent prediction based on conformal covariance, while for q=4 the situation is less conclusive.

SURFACE CRITICAL BEHAVIOUR OF SOME TWO-DIMENSIONAL LATTICE MODELS

Attilio L. Stella, Carlo Vanderzande

A review is given of recent work on the ordinary surface critical behaviour of systems in two dimensions. Several models of interest in statistical mechanics are considered: Potts model, percolation, Ising clusters, ZN-model, O(n) model and polymers. Numerical results for surface exponents, obtained by suitable finite size scaling extrapolations, are discussed in the light of recent advances based on the conformal invariance approach. Surface exponents are often seen as important tests of conformal invariance predictions. In other cases these exponents provide important information for a location of the problem within the classification schemes offered by the conformal approach, and a determination of its universality class. A relevant example of the first aspect is the study of the q-state Potts model with q near 4, for which an analytical study of logarithmic scaling corrections is needed to achieve a successful test. The latter point of view applies, e.g., to the more controversial cases of polymers at the theta point and critical Ising clusters. Emphasis is put on the importance of an integrated study of both bulk and surface properties. Relevant issues, like the possible existence of analytical expressions for the indices in particular model families, or of general relationships between bulk and surface exponents, are critically discussed. The new problem of critical behaviour at fractal boundaries is also considered for random (RW) and self-avoiding walks (SAW). From the numerical analysis of this problem remarkable universalities of the surface exponents seem to emerge, which, in the case of SAW’s, are still far from being understood.

Surface and bulk transitions in three-dimensional O(n) models

Youjin Deng, Henk W. J. Blöte, M. P. Nightingale

Using Monte Carlo methods and finite-size scaling, we investigate surface criticality in the $\mathrm{O}(n)$ models on the simple-cubic lattice with $n=1$, 2, and 3, i.e., the Ising, $XY$, and Heisenberg models. For the critical couplings we find ${K}_{\mathrm{c}}(n=2)=0.454\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}1659$ (10) and ${K}_{\mathrm{c}}(n=3)=0.693\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}003$ (2). We simulate the three models with open surfaces and determine the surface magnetic exponents at the ordinary transition to be ${y}_{h1}^{(\mathrm{o})}=0.7374\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}(15)$, 0.781 (2), and 0.813 (2) for $n=1$, 2, and 3, respectively. Then we vary the surface coupling ${K}_{1}$ and locate the so-called special transition at ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{\mathrm{c}}(n=1)=0.502\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}14$ (8) and ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{\mathrm{c}}(n=2)=0.6222$ (3), where $\ensuremath{\kappa}={K}_{1}∕K\ensuremath{-}1$. The corresponding surface thermal and magnetic exponents are ${y}_{t1}^{(\mathrm{s})}=0.715$ (1) and ${y}_{h1}^{(\mathrm{s})}=1.636$ (1) for the Ising model, and ${y}_{t1}^{(\mathrm{s})}=0.608$ (4) and ${y}_{h1}^{(\mathrm{s})}=1.675$ (1) for the $XY$ model. Finite-size corrections with an exponent close to $\ensuremath{-}1∕2$ occur for both models. Also for the Heisenberg model we find substantial evidence for the existence of a special surface transition.
