Abstract

Today, information security plays a key role in communications and exchanges.Until now Various approaches including: Quantum encryption and Quantum key Distribution (QKD), have been utilized for information security, that act based on Quantum Mechanic principles, so that if one tries to hear the information, it will be detected via increasing error rate in receiver part. BB84 is one of secure algorithms in quantum encryption area, bearing less error rate in comparison to other quantum algorithms. The goal of the paper is to improve the algorithms as much as possible in order to defend the attacks. We use a hybrid key to accomplish the task in which we add authentication and time limit beside the QKD key.

En-BB84: Advancements in Secure Quantum Key Distribution with Improved Error Resilience and Built-in Authentication

Yashwanth Venkat, D Preetha Evangeline, P Anandha Kumar

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a method that enables secure communication between two parties by applying the ideas of quantum physics. By minimizing information leakage that can happen during the key generation process, privacy amplification is a technique used to improve the security of QKD. The technique involves processing the raw key obtained from QKD through a randomization procedure to remove any residual information that may have been leaked during the quantum transmission. While privacy amplification can significantly improve the security of QKD, the effectiveness of the technique is limited by the quality of the initial raw key. The BB84 QKD protocol has been improved with the proposed En-BB84 protocol, which includes built-in authentication and integrity checks. The En-BB84 protocol ensures secure distribution of secret keys and protects against tampering by attackers. Key distillation and error correction techniques are employed to extract a shorter, more secure shared secret key and correct errors introduced during qubit transmission. The protocol utilizes a four-state QKD approach, expanding on the traditional two-state scheme of BB84. A simulation of the En-BB84 protocol is demonstrated using a quantum circuit implemented with Qiskit in Python. The circuit employs various gates and operations, including Hadamard, CX, controlled swap, and RZ gates, to achieve encoding and error correction. Furthermore, we have designed a better protocol with improved error rates by incorporating improvisations on the BB84 protocol. Experimental results indicate the successful integration of the B92 error correction scheme into the modified BB84 protocol, enhancing the security and performance of QKD systems.

Enhanced Quantum Key Distribution Protocol to Improve Robustness and Error Minimization

Kartheek Ravipati, Srikanth Vemuru

Quantum cryptography represents a swiftly advancing discipline with the capacity tofundamentally transform the landscape of data security. A prime application in thisdomain is quantum key distribution (QKD), which facilitates secure communication byleveraging the principles of quantum mechanics to generate and disseminatecryptographic keys. This study is concentrated on the methodologies for safeguardingcommunication and data transfer against cyber-attacks through the utilization ofquantum cryptography, particularly focusing on the quantum key distribution protocolknown as BB84. BB84 is the first protocol for QKD in the year 1984. In this paper wesimulated a new way to enhance quantum key distribution protocol BB84 by introducingmulti-basis encoding, enhanced error correction, and built-in authentication. Theadditional basis Y provides increased robustness against intercept resend attacks, and theauthentication mechanism ensures secure classical communication and hence there willbe no loss of information.

QUANTUM KEY DISTRIBUTION SCHEME: AN IMPROVEMENT BASED ON BB84 PROTOCOL

Kausik Saha

Cryptography is being introduced to secure data. Through Classical Cryptographic technique, we can encrypt our data and secure secret key also. But classical cryptography is based on mathematical techniques where reversing one-way function is possible with sufficient computing power and time. So, Quantum Cryptography is introduced to overcome those drawbacks of traditional classical cryptography. It is based on the values of quantum mechanics and photon. Scientists and researchers have brought up a new key distribution protocol based on Quantum Cryptography is called Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Protocol. The first QKD protocol BB84 was introduced by Charles Bennett and Gilles Brassard in 1984. After that several QKD protocols have been created. In this paper we have improved BB84 Protocol by removing the drawbacks of the existing algorithm towards Eavesdropping which may not be detected or disclosing large portion of secret key. Steps of the existing BB84 algorithm along with the modified one is described in detail with example and pseudo code. Limitations of BB84 and comparative study of both the existing and the improved one based on their security has been made and described in this current work.

The Mechanics, Security, and Practical Vulnerabilities of the BB84 Quantum Key Distribution Protocol

Anusha Tiwari

As quantum computing threatens classical cryptography like RSA via Shor's algorithm, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)—especially BB84—offers physics-based security. BB84 leverages quantum principles: Heisenberg Uncertainty, No-Cloning Theorem, and superposition, shifting from math complexity to unbreakable physical laws using polarized photons for key exchange. The protocol detects eavesdropping through Quantum Bit Error Rate (QBER), showing 25% errors in Intercept-Resend attacks. Key challenges like Photon Number Splitting (PNS) attacks are addressed via decoy states. Compared to B92 and E91, BB84 balances feasibility and security best. Despite issues like signal loss, BB84 provides provably secure communication, restoring trust in a post-quantum world.

Quantum Cipher Exchange with BB84 Protocol and Cryptography Using the One-Time Pad Algorithm

Vignesh, Deepa N P., Teena Srinivasan +2 more

Quantum cryptography using the BB84 protocol is at the forefront of modern secure communication. This paper emphasizes on BB84 protocol and its role in secure key distribution utilizing the Qiskit libraries in Python to simulate Quantum Key distribution (QKD). This QKD is then applied to the One-Time Pad algorithm for message encryption and decryption. Ensuring data confidentiality and integrity and is difficult due to advanced cyber threats and the potential of quantum computing to undermine traditional cryptographic methods. Current encryption techniques are susceptible to quantum related attacks, risking the decryption of sensitive data. Alice (sender) and Bob (receiver) use classical encryption to communicate but eavesdropper Eve with quantum capabilities, can potentially decrypt their messages. This vulnerability affects critical data security in finance, healthcare, and national security, making robust cryptographic solutions essential for maintaining trust and safety in digital communications. Our work emphasis the utilization of the quantum key generated by employing the BB84 protocol with the help of Qiskit library in python as cipher text in the process of one time pad encryption and decryption. This encrypted data dispatched between the sender and receiver to ensure maximum security, confidentiality and integrity over the period of communication.
