Phase control in coherent population distribution in molecules

Avijit Datta

A chirped laser pulse transfers population from one level to another level accessible by one photon dipole transition. We have used a pair of phase-locked chirped pulses of same frequency instead of a single chirped pulse to achieve phase control over the population transfer and thus creating coherent population distribution in hydrogen molecule. Simultaneous actions of the phase controlled interference and rapid adiabatic passages due to chirped pulses lead to the control in population transfer from the ground X(v = 0, j = 0) level to the C(v = 2, j = 1) level. We have extended this two-level system to a three-level 1 + 1 ladder system for population transfer from the X level to the J(v = 2, j = 2) level via the C intermediate level using two pairs of phase-locked laser chirped pulses and have achieved laudable control over the coherent population distribution.

Population transfer via adiabatic passage in the Rydberg potassium atom

李小红, Xianzhou Zhang, Zhang Rui-Zhou +1 more

Using the time-dependent multilevel approach, we have calculated the coherent population transfer between the quantum states of potassium atom by a single frequency-chirped laser pulse. The result shows that a pair of sequential 'broadband' frequency-chirped laser pulses can efficiently transfer population from the initial state of the ladder system to the target state. It is also found that the population can be efficiently transferred to a target state and trapped there by using an 'intuitive' or a 'counterintuitive' frequency sweep laser pulse in the case of 'narrowband' frequency-chirped laser pulse. Our research shows that the complete population transfer is related to the pulse duration, chirp rate, and amplitude of the laser pulse.

Population transfer in four-level ladder system assisted by dressing fields

Rui Zhang

Even-N-level ladder system has been analyzed for population transfer by counterintuitive frequency-chirped laser pulse,in which N-2 intermediate states are strongly coupled by dressing laser field. The specific analysis for the four-level ladder system has been carried out by using a dressed-state picture,as representative for even-N-system.It is found that a well-controlled pulse area is required for complete population transfer from |1〉|4〉 if the dressing field is sufficiently strong and on resonance. And it is essential to detune the pump and Stokes laser so that one of the dressed intermediate states is on resonance, leading to the reduction of the whole system to the three-level system.
