Abstract

A scheme is proposed to observe the collapses and revivals of a mesoscopic superposition of coherent states in the motion of a trapped ion. In the scheme the ion motion in the x -axis is first prepared in a Schrödinger cat state, and then coupled to the motion in the z -axis. With the vibrational excitation exchange between the two modes, the mesoscopic quantum coherence collapses and revives periodically, providing an example for complementarity.

Vibrational pair cat states

Shih-Chuan Gou, Jörg Steinbach, P. L. Knight

We propose a scheme for generating mesoscopic superpositions of two distinguishable pair coherent states of motion in a two-dimensional ion trap. In our scheme, the trapped ion is excited bichromatically by five laser beams along different directions in the X-Y plane of the ion trap. Four of these have the same frequency and can be derived from the same source, reducing the demands on the experimentalist. We show that if the initial vibrational state is given by a two-mode Fock state, as demonstrated in recent experiments, these highly correlated two-mode ``Schr\"odinger cat'' states are realized when the system reaches its steady state, which is indicated by the extinction of the fluorescence emitted by the ion. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Preparation of motional macroscopic quantum-interference states of a trapped ion

Shi‐Biao Zheng

We propose a scheme for generating macroscopic quantum-interference (Schr\"odinger-cat) states of the motion of a trapped ion. In the scheme, a trapped ion is driven by two laser beams tuned to the first lower and upper vibrational sidebands, respectively. Under certain conditions, the detection of the internal state of the ion leaves the vibrational motion in a coherent state superposition. The scheme can be easily generalized to prepare other kinds of cat states.

Measurement of the decoherence of a mesoscopic superposition of motional states of a trapped ion

Zheng Shi-Biao

We propose a scheme to observe the decoherence of a mesoscopic superposition of two coherent states in the motion of a trapped ion. In the scheme the ion is excited by two perpendicular lasers tuned to the ion transition. The decoherence is revealed by the decrease of the correlation between two successive measurements of the internal state of the ion after relevant laser–ion interaction.

Reversible Decoherence of a Mesoscopic Superposition of Field States

J. M. Raimond, M. Brune, S. Haroche

We describe the blueprint of an experiment in which the decoherence of a mesoscopic superposition of radiation states (``Schr\"odinger cat'') becomes a reversible process. When the high $Q$ cavity containing the Schr\"odinger cat is coupled to another resonator, the mesoscopic quantum coherence first decays rapidly, then exhibits sharp revivals with the period of the energy exchange between the two cavities. The interpretation of this experiment emphasizes the link between decoherence and complementarity and leads to an illuminating quantitative interpretation of the usual irreversible decoherence phenomenon.

Preparation of superpositions of SU(2) coherent states of the motion of a trapped ion.

Shi‐Biao Zheng

A scheme is presented for the generation of superpositions of two two-mode SU(2) coherent states of the motion for a trapped ion. In the scheme an ion is trapped in a two-dimensional isotropic harmonic potential and driven by two resonant laser beams. Under certain conditions, the motional two-mode SU(2) cat state can be generated after a conditional measurement on the internal state following the ion-laser interaction.

Preparation of Motional Mesoscopic Superpositions of Squeezed Coherent States of N Trapped Ions

A scheme is proposed to generate arbitrary, discrete superpostions of squeezed coherent states of the squeezed center of mass of N trapped ions along a straight line in phase space. The scheme is based on a resonant bichromatic excitation of each trapped ion that generates displacement and squeezing in the vibrational motion conditioned to each internal state. In this paper, we also show that such a method can be used for the engineering of motional quantum states.
