MACROSCOPIC QUANTUM COHERENCE IN JOSEPHSON SYSTEMS

B. Ruggiero, Valentina Corato, E. Esposito +4 more

We present our recent experiments on macroscopic tunneling in the quantum regime for underdamped Josephson junctions with different classical-quantum crossover temperatures. These experiments are performed towards the observation of macroscopic quantum coherence in Josephson systems. A new method to measure coherence in a two-level system based on the adiabatic inversion in an rf squid, is presented. This approach could open new perspectives in view of realization of an elementary quantum bit.

Isolation filters for macroscopic quantum coherence experiment

Pavel Rott, M. J. Feldman

One of the main difficulties in observing quantum coherence (MQC) in rf-SQUID based systems is extremely short coherence times. Quantum coherence in macroscopic system is rapidly destroyed by interaction with the environment. This precludes any MQC experiments from using high-speed data acquisition that allows direct evidence of coherent evolution of linear combination of rf-SQUID eigenstates. In order to perform such experiments, isolation structures that effectively shield MQC experimental elements from small-signal interaction with data acquisition circuitry on chip and at the same time allow large signals such as RSFQ pulses to propagate through. We consider design and simulation of series of Josephson junctions with varied parameters as an example of such isolation filters.

Quantum Coherence in a Superfluid Josephson Junction

Supradeep Narayana, Yuki Sato

We report a new kind of experiment in which we take an array of nanoscale apertures that form a superfluid (4)He Josephson junction and apply quantum phase gradients directly along the array. We observe collective coherent behaviors from aperture elements, leading to quantum interference. Connections to superconducting and Bose-Einstein condensate Josephson junctions as well as phase coherence among the superfluid aperture array are discussed.
