Boson-Faddeev in the Unitary Limit and Efimov States

Abstract

A numerical study of the Faddeev equation for bosons is made with two-body interactions at or close to the Unitary limit. Separable interactions are obtained from phase-shifts defined by scattering length and effective range. In EFT-language this would correspond to NLO. Both ground and Efimov state energies are calculated. For effective ranges $r_0 > 0$ and rank-1 potentials the total energy $E_T$ is found to converge with momentum cut-off $\Lambda$ for $\Lambda > \sim 10/r_0$ . In the Unitary limit ($1/a=r_0= 0$) the energy does however diverge. It is shown (analytically) that in this case $E_T=E_u\Lambda^2$. Calculations give $E_u=-0.108$ for the ground state and $E_u=-1.\times10^{-4}$ for the single Efimov state found. The cut-off divergence is remedied by modifying the off-shell t-matrix by replacing the rank-1 by a rank-2 phase-shift equivalent potential. This is somewhat similar to the counterterm method suggested by Bedaque et al. This investigation is exploratory and does not refer to any specific physical system.

Spin 1/2 Fermions in the Unitary Limit.III

H. S. Køhler

In scattering theory, the unitary limit is defined by an infinite scattering-length and a zero effective range, corresponding to a phase-shift π/2, independent of energy. This condition is satisfied by a rank-1 separable potential V(k,k')=-v(k)v(k') with v^{2}(k)=(4π)^{2}(Λ^{2}-k^{2})^{-1/2}, Λbeing the cut-off in momentum space.Previous calculations using a Pauli-corrected ladder summation to calculate the energy of a zero temperature many body system of spin 1/2 fermions with this interaction gave ξ=0.24 (in units of kinetic energy) independent of density and with Λ---->infinity. This value of ξis appreciably smaller than the experimental and that obtained from other calculations, most notably from Monte Carlo, which in principle would be the most reliable. Our previous work did however also show a strong dependence on effective range r_0 (with r_0=0 at unitarity). With an increase to r_0=1.0 the energy varied from ξ~0.38 at k_f=0.6 1/fm to ~0.45 at k_f=1.8 1/fm which is somewhat closer to the Monte-Carlo results. These previous calculations are here extended by including the effect of the previously neglected mean-field propagation, the dispersion correction. This is repulsive and found to increase drastically with decreasing effective range. It is large enough to suggest a revised value of ξ~0.4 ~0.5 independent of r_0. Off-shell effects are also investigated by introducing a rank-2 (phase-shift equivalent) separable potential. Effects of 10% or more in energy could be demonstrated for r_0>0. It is pointed out that a computational cut-off in momentum-space brings in another scale in the in otherwise scale-less unitary problem.

Efimov Physics and Beyond

Sigurd Kohler

Efimov physics relates to 3-body systems with large 2-body scattering lengths a and small effective ranges r. For many systems in nature the assumption of a small effective range is not valid. The present report shows binding energies E of three identical bosons calculated with 2-body potentials that are fitted to scattering data and momentum cut-offs (L) by inverse scattering. Results agree with previous works in the case of r<0 when L=~10/r. With 1/a=0 the converged energies are given by E(n) =C(n)/r*r with n labeling the energy-branch and calculated values C(0)=0.77, C(1)=.0028. This gives a ratio ~278 thus differing from the value ~515 in the Efimov case. Efimov's angular dependent function is calculated. Good agreement with previous works is obtained when r<< a. With the increased values of effective range the shallow states still appear Efimov-like. For deeper states the angular dependence differs but is independent of the effective range.

Efimov states in He4 trimers by two-body effective-range and scattering-length analysis: A comparison with Faddeev calculations

Stephen Huber

A comparison is made between the number of Efimov States present in $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ trimers as calculated using the Faddeev equations in the Faddeev coordinate-momentum approach with estimates predicted by N=(1/\ensuremath{\pi})ln(\ensuremath{\Vert}a\ensuremath{\Vert}/${r}_{0}$) using realistic phenomenological He-He potentials. It is found that there is good agreement for systems supporting few states and that agreement remains when the Efimov states are forced to disappear by mathematically altering the potentials.

Spin 1/2 Fermions in the Unitary Limit.I

H. S. Køhler

This report concerns the energy of a zero-temperature many-body system of spin 1/2 fermions interacting via a two-body potential with a free space infinite scattering length and zero effective range; the Unitary limit. Given the corresponding phase-shift $δ(k)=π/2$ a one-term separable potential is obtained by inverse scattering assuming a momentum cut-off $Λ$ such that $δ(k)=0$ for $k>Λ$. The \it effective \rm interaction in the many-body system is calculated in a pp-ladder approximation with Pauli-blocking but neglecting mean-field (dispersion) corrections; effective mass $m^{*}=1$. Using only the zero relative momentum component of this interaction the total energy is $ξ=4/9$ (in units of the fermigas), a result reported by several previous authors. Integrating the momentum dependent interaction over the Fermi sea this energy is revised to $ξ=0.24.$ This result is independent of density and of the cut-off $Λ$ if $Λ> \sim 3k_{f}$. With $m^{*}\neq 1$ there is however a strong dependence on this cut-off. Including hh-ladders estimates give $ξ=0.4\leftrightarrow 0.6$, but a reliable result would in this case require a Green's function calculation.

Universal range corrections to Efimov trimers for a class of paths to the unitary limit

Alejandro Kievsky, M. Gattobigio

Using potential models, we analyze range corrections to the universal law dictated by the Efimov theory of three bosons. In the case of finite-range interactions, we have observed that at first order, it is necessary to supplement the theory with one finite-range parameter ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{n}^{3}$ for each specific $n$ level [A. Kievsky and M. Gattobigio, Phys. Rev. A 87, 052719 (2013)]. The value of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{n}^{3}$ depends on the way the potentials are changed to tune the scattering length toward the unitary limit. In this work, we analyze a particular path in which the length ${r}_{B}=a\ensuremath{-}{a}_{B}$, measuring the difference between the two-body scattering length $a$ and the energy-scattering length ${a}_{B}$, is almost constant. Analyzing systems with very different scales, such as atomic or nuclear systems, we observe that the finite-range parameter remains almost constant along the path with a numerical value of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{0}^{3}\ensuremath{\approx}0.87$ for the ground-state level. This observation suggests the possibility of constructing a single universal function that incorporates finite-range effects for this class of paths. The result is used to estimate the three-body parameter ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{*}$ in the case of real atomic systems brought to the unitary limit through broad Feshbach resonances. Furthermore, we show that the finite-range parameter can be put in relation to the two-body contact ${C}_{2}$ at the unitary limit.
