Thomas–Fermi profile of a fast rotating Bose–Einstein condensate

Dinh-Thi Nguyen, Nicolas Rougerie

We study the minimizers of a magnetic 2D non-linear Schrödinger energy functional in a quadratic trapping potential, describing a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate. We derive an effective Thomas-Fermi-like model in the rapidly rotating limit where the centrifugal force compensates the confinement, and available states are restricted to the lowest Landau level. The coupling constant of the effective Thomas-Fermi functional is linked to the emergence of vortex lattices (the Abrikosov problem). We define it via a low density expansion of the energy of the corresponding homogeneous gas in the thermodynamic limit.

Beats and expansion of two-component Bose–Einstein condensates in the Thomas–Fermi limit

James Q Quach

A unique feature of multi-component BECs is the possibility of beating frequencies in collective oscillations. We analytically determine this beating frequency for the two-component BEC in one-dimension. We also show that the Thomas-Fermi approximation, where the quantum pressure is neglected, describes well the expansion of the two-component condensate released from an harmonic trap.

Phase separation of two-component Bose–Einstein condensates

Zuhan Liu

Recently, coupled systems of nonlinear Schrödinger equations have been used extensively to describe mixtures Bose–Einstein condensates. In this paper, we study the distribution of two different hyperfine spin states of a binary mixture of three dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates. In a double condensate, an interface may occur due to large intraspecies and interspecies scattering lengths. We prove that there is an asymptotic separation of different phases in the strong coupling (Thomas–Fermi) limit.
