Abstract

We demonstrate 2.5 times phase conjugation by four-wave-mixing with the use of pico-second pulses in a rhodamine6G dye polymer amplifier. Phase conjugation pulse shortening by a factor of 2 is also measured.

Picosecond four-wave mixing in a saturable amplifier polymer dye

T. Yonekawa, Takashige Omatsu, T. Hirose +2 more

Summary form only given. Self-diffraction by four-wave-mixing (FWM) in a nonlinear medium such as liquid crystals and photorefractive materials can contribute to perform energy transfer between the two incident beams. FWM in a saturable gain media has received an intense attention in recent years. Owing to the amplification experienced by all the interaction beams, the high diffraction efficiency is expected. This paper presents the demonstration of transient self-diffraction by pico-second FWM in a saturable amplifier Rhodamine 6G polymer dye. In this work, we extend our previous study of FWM in an inverted polymer dye in the transient regime by using signal and pump lasers with pulse duration of much less than the population relaxation time (several nanoseconds) in the polymer dye. The polymer dye saturable amplifier is shown to be an excellent nonlinear material with high diffraction efficiency and fast response time. It has a potential for applications such as real-time holography, phase conjugation, pulse shaping, and all optical temporal-spatial conversion.

Phase Conjugation by Degenerate Four-wave Mixing in Inverted Dye Solutions

P.A. Routledge, Terence A. King

Phase conjugation has been observed in an amplifying medium of rhodamine 6G dye molecules in solution, excited either by flashlamps or by a laser. It is found that the mechanism involved in phase conjugation is degenerate four-wave mixing through gain saturation, and reasonable agreement obtained with the theory of saturable amplifiers. A phase-conjugate signal was observed over the tuning range of the dye system (580–605 nm) and a reflectivity up to a maximum of 25% was obtained.

Pico-second phase conjugation by four wave mixing in a diode pumped Nd:YVO/sub 4/ slab amplifier

Yasukuni Ojima, Takashige Omatsu

In this paper, we present a 80-times phase conjugation for pico-second pulses by four-wave-mixing (FWM) in a diode-pumped Nd:YVO/sub 4/ slab amplifier. The reflectivity is the highest value, to the best of our knowledge, obtained by phase conjugation in pico-second regime.

Highly efficient phase conjugation in a laser-injection-seeded solid dye laser

Hirohumi Watanabe, Takashige Omatsu, Mitsuhiro Tateda

Summary form only given. Efficient phase conjugation in saturable gain medium solid dye has received much attention in application fields such as optical image processing, spectroscopy, and medical optics. For practical phase conjugators, an energy extraction efficiency, defined as a ratio of the extracted phase-conjugate energy to the total beam energy injected externally into the phase conjugator, is a more important parameter than the phase-conjugate reflectivity. We present an efficient phase conjugator by degenerated four-wave mixing in a laser injection-seeded solid dye laser. Energy extraction efficiency as much as 130 was obtained. The solid laser dye was composed of matrix polymethyl methacrylate with 0.1-0.2 wt.% doping of Rhodamine 6G dye.
