Measurement of the probability distribution of thermally excited fluxoid quantum transitions in a superconducting ring closed by a Josephson junction

The thermally induced distribution of transitions between fluxoid quantum states of a superconducting ring closed by a Josephson junction has been measured. The observed dependence of its width $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ on temperature, ring inductance, and weak-link critical current, as well as its shape, confirms the recent theoretical results of Kurkij\"arvi, $\ensuremath{\sigma}\ensuremath{\propto}L{({i}_{c})}^{\frac{1}{3}}{T}^{\frac{2}{3}}$.

Quantum dissipative behaviour of a superconducting weak link constriction ring

Antonio Luis Extremera

We analyze the flux mode regime in a superconducting ring closed with a Josephson junction by means of a Feynman path-integral treatment. We derive the propagator for the quantum dissipative system, when a damping term in the Anderson-Josephson lagrangian is included. The wavefunctions and the energy levels are obtained from this propagator. Agreement with the exact results for the undamped case is discussed. Once found, the classical limit appears to be a formal way to obtain a relation between the conjugate variables for the weak link. The requirements of the equivalence between Feynman's and Schrödinger's approach allow to speculate on the Feynman path differential measure in flux space for the system under consideration.

The AC Josephson effect and submillimeter wave mixing with a weak-link array of grain boundaries formed in YBCO film

Toshiaki Matsui, Hiroshi Ohta

The authors present a model for a series-parallel array of small metallic (nontunneling) Josephson junctions. The transmission and configuration of pair electrons between small superconducting regions are considered assuming the presence of a strong interaction between the electrostatic energy (2e)/sup 2//2C and the Josephson effect in a network of metallic weak links. The model predicts that the same behavior as that of a single junction is obtained with a superconducting weak-link device comprising multiple small superconducting regions joined by conductive bridges. In an experiment in the 100- and 320-GHz frequency ranges, the constriction of a YBCO film formed with a network of grain-boundary Josephson weak links showed that the AC Josephson effect is the same as for a single Josephson element. It is confirmed that the constriction works as a harmonic mixer at 318 GHz and that a network of high-T/sub c/ superconducting weak links can be used for a practical device operating at submillimeter-wave frequencies.>
