THE CONVERGENCE OF A MANY-BODY PERTURBATION SERIES FOR AN ATTRACTIVE FERMI-SYSTEM

Abstract

The problem of the convergence for Wigner and Schr?dinger perturbation series is discussed by means of the functional analysis method. It is found that the convergent radii of two typic perturbation series are equivalent, but the rates of the convergence or divergence are not equivalent. An useful test is given.

Perturbation theory for projected states II. Convergence criteria and a soluble model

B. Atalay, A. Mann, Ronald F. Peierls

Abstract It is shown that a perturbation expansion for projected states proposed earlier satisfies the Schrödinger equation. Modified forms of the series are suggested, and criteria for their convergence are discussed. The method is applied to the ‘Lipkin model' for a two-level many-body problem, which is exactly soluble. The second-order term in the perturbation series is shown to give a good approximation, and is compared with alternative methods. The convergence factor of the series is shown to be better than that of ordinary perturbation theory, which in most cases of this model is divergent.

The Asymptotic Behavior of Perturbation Expansions in Many-Body Problem and Superconducting State

Kenji Fukushima, Nobuyuki Fukuda

The convergence problem of perturbation expansions in the many-body problem is discussed by employing some simple models. The expectation value of rhe resolvent operator is analytic around the origin of the coupling constant so long as the system is enclosed in a finite volume, but as the volume tends to infinity with the density of particles kept constant, the question arises whether this limit is allowed to be taken prior to the sum of the perturbation series. Even if this is the case, the resulting series turns out to be usually divergent, but in some models we consider we can find a function whose asymptotic expansion coincides with this series. It is shown that for the repulsive interactions the function thus obtained gives a correct answer, while for the attractive interactions which lead to a superconducting state it is far from the true one. The asymptotic behavior of the perturbation series in the latter case is examined in some detail.

About Approximation of Convergence Superoperators in Quantum Perturbation Theory

Dorota Bielińska-Wąż, Ivana Paidarová, Ph. Durand

Perturbation methods are generally used for solving wave operator equations associated with the determination of effective Hamiltonians. In many cases the standard Rayleigh-Schrödinger and Brillouin-Wigner series either converge slowly or diverge. Therefore it is necessary to modify or to renormalize the standard wave equations. For that purpose derivative and convergence superoperators within the Ralyeigh-Schrödinger and Brillouin-Wigner formalisms were introduced.A new efficient approximation for convergence superoperators is investigated in this paper. Its application to a model system of N non-interacting molecules shows that this approximation can overcome convergence difficulties.

Convergent perturbation theory for studying phase transitions

Mikhail Yu. Nalimov, A. V. Ovsyannikov

We propose a method for constructing a perturbation theory with a finite radius of convergence for a rather wide class of quantum field models traditionally used to describe critical and near-critical behavior in problems in statistical physics. For the proposed convergent series, we use an instanton analysis to find the radius of convergence and also indicate a strategy for calculating their coefficients based on the diagrams in the standard (divergent) perturbation theory. We test the approach in the example of the standard stochastic dynamics $$ \mathrm{A} $$ -model and a matrix model of the phase transition in a system of nonrelativistic fermions, where its application allows explaining the previously observed quasiuniversal behavior of the trajectories of a first-order phase transition.

Divergence and Summability of the Many-Fermion Perturbation Series

George Allen Baker Jr.

We investigate the convergence of the many-fermion perturbation series and show, for the case of the square-well potential, that it is a divergent series. We bound the rate of divergence and show that, by using appropriate summation procedures, it may be summed to the physically correct sum, provided the density is low enough.

Perturbation methods in quantum mechanics

Zhi Chen

Three kinds of perturbation methods for nondegenerate quantum system are briefly introduced and compared applying to a simple model. The first one is Rayleigh-Schrdinger (R-S) method which is widely discussed in text book,a very useful recurrence relation is also given. The second one is iterative perturbation method which is formulated based on Brillouin-Wigner (B-W) perturbation,it can be used to make a program to evaluate the eigensolutions by computer. The third one is superconvergent method proposed by Scherer, which is important to determine the existence of quantum Lie transformation.
