Coherent control of vibrational-rotational transitions in diatomic molecule under the action of bichromatic laser field

Abstract

The paper is devoted to the theoretical study of the possibility of coherent control of the vibrational-rotational transitions in diatomic molecule under the action of bichromatic laser field. Two possible absorption branches are considered. Dependencies of the control efficiency upon the parameters involved such as gas temperature and electric field amplitudes of the monochromatic components are investigated. Numerical calculations are performed for the case of CO molecule in Morse approximation. The possibility of the efficient coherent control of the considered process is demonstrated.

Coherent control of atomic excitation under the action of bichromatic laser field in the presence of electric field

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko

The paper is devoted to the theoretical investigation of the phase control of atomic photo-excitation in discrete energy spectrum under the action of bichromatic laser field with the frequency ratio 1:2 in the presence of stationary electric field. The calculations are made for the case of alkali atoms. It is shown that the phase modulation of the photo-excitation strongly depends upon the electric field strength and the ratio between the intensities of the monochromatic components of the radiation. The optimal range of parameters for the effect observation is determined.

Radiative processes in a bichromatic laser field with multiple frequencies

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko

A review of experimental and theoretical studies on radiative processes induced by a bichromatic (two-frequency) laser radiation in atoms, molecules, and solids is presented. The optical excitation of matter is considered at transitions of different types: bound—bound, bound—free, and free—free. A special attention is devoted to the possibility of the coherent control of the basic characteristics of radiative phenomena by varying the relative phase of monochromatic components of radiation. It is shown that this method opens up new possibilities for controlling photoinduced processes.

Coherent control of two-level system under bichromatic excitation

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko

Coherent phase control under the interaction between bichromatic radiation with multiple frequencies and quantum systems is the topic of the last time investigations both experimental and theoretical. This type of nonlinear optical control enables one to manipulate the characteristics of radiation processes by the change of the relative phase of bichromatic field. The present study is devoted to the theoretical analysis of the coherent control of two-level system behavior under bichromatic excitation in the frame of perturbation approach. The general expressions have been derived which are valid for any integer ratio n between the frequencies of monochromatic components of radiation. Obtained formulas describe the system characteristics as functions of relative phase of bichromatic field and other radiation parameters. Bichromatic excitation of Rubidium atom is considered as numerical example.

Coherent phase control of excitation of atoms by bichromatic laser radiation in an electric field

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko

A new method for coherent phase control of excitation of atoms in a discrete spectrum under the action of bichromatic laser radiation with the frequency ratio 1 : 2 is analysed. An important feature of this control method is the presence of a electrostatic field, which removes the parity selection rule for one of the control channels. It is shown that for the phase difference between the monochromatic radiation components, corresponding to the destructive interference between channels, there exists the electrostatic field strength at which the excited atomic transition is `bleached'. It is proposed to use luminescence at the adjacent atomic transition for detecting the phase dependence of optical excitation.

Nonspreading wave packets of diatomic molecules: Generation and control

Jung‐Hoon Kim, Jian‐Min Yuan, Wing‐Ki Liu +1 more

A circularly polarized electric field is used to create a trap that can guide the rotational motion of diatomic molecules. Theoretical analyses and numerical calculations support the existence of trapped nonspreading wave packets rotating with a electric field. Optimal coherent control of the rotational motion of diatomic molecules can be achieved by manipulating the nonspreading wave packets with a circularly polarized electric field whose amplitude and frequency are changed adiabatically.

Coherent control of population and pulse propagation beyond the rotating wave approximation

Ji‐Cai Liu, Viviane Costa Felicíssimo, Freddy Fernandes Guimarães +2 more

The dynamics of populations of the vibrational states in a NO molecule (one-photon absorption) and of the electronic states in a 4,4'-bis(dimethylamino) stilbene molecule (two-photon absorption) is studied versus the frequency, intensity and shape of the laser pulse. We show that specially designed infrared laser pulses can build selective populations of certain vibrational states. A detuning of light frequency from the vibrational resonance qualitatively changes the dynamics of populations. It is found out that the populations of the nonresonant levels follow the pulse shape adiabatically if the detuning significantly exceeds the inverse characteristic time of the change of the pulse. Depopulation of the nonresonant vibrational states leads to a high population of the resonant state at the end of the pulse. Complete breakdown of the standard rotating wave approximation for a two-photon absorption process is observed even for a rather small intensity of the laser pulse. An analytical solution for the interaction of a pulse with a three-level system beyond the rotating wave approximation is obtained, and it is in close agreement with the strict numerical solution of the amplitude equations. Special attention is paid to the population dynamics of randomly oriented molecules. The orientational disorder as well as the vibrations limit the coherent population transfer. Calculations show the strong role of the anisotropy of photoexcitation in the coherent control of populations which can affect the anisotropy of photobleaching.
