Analysis of the soliton solutions of a 3-level Maxwell-Bloch system with rotational symmetry

Abstract

The dynamics of soliton pulses for use in nonlinear optical devices is mathematically modelled by Maxwell-Bloch systems of equations for the interaction of light with a uniform distribution of quantum-mechanical atoms. We study the Reduced Maxwell-Bloch (RMB) equations occurring when an ensemble of rotationally symmetric 3-level atoms is assumed. The model applies for on and off-resonance conditions and is completely integrable using Inverse Scattering theory, since it arises as the compatibility condition of a 3 x 3 AKNS-system. Furthermore this integrability remains valid for all timescales of the optical field because only the “one-way wave approximation” is required during the derivation. Solutions are constructed in two ways: 1. Darboux-Bäcklund transforms are applied, generating single soliton pulses of ultrashort (< 1ps) duration, and families of elliptically polarised 2-solitons not possible in lower dimensional problems. 2. A general Inverse Scattering scheme is developed and tested. The Direct Scattering Problem is dealt with first to obtain a complete set of scattering data. Subsequently the Inverse Problem is solved both formally and then in explicit closed form for the special case that the reflection coefficients vanish for real values of the spectral parameter. In this case the main result is a determined system of n linear algebraic equations which yield the n-soliton of our RMB-system. It is confirmed that the 1-solitons found by means of Darboux transform are precisely the same as those given by the full mechanism of Inverse Scattering. Finally we calculate the invariants of the motion for the RMB-equations, and derive an evolution equation giving the variation with propagation distance of the invariant functionals when the original RMB-system is modified by an arbitrary perturbing term. As an application dissipative effects on 1-solitons are considered.

Darboux transformations and coherent interaction of the light pulse with two-level media

Vladimir Borisovich Matveev, Mikhail A. Salle, Andrei V. Rybin

Applications of the Darboux transformation method to study the reduced Maxwell-Bloch (RMB) system and of the self-induced transparency (SIT) equations are considered. Both systems describe the propagation of ultrashort optical pulses in a two-level medium to a reasonable approximation. The main result of the present work is the construction of multisoliton solutions on an arbitrary background for RMB and SIT equations. Particular cases of these solutions are discussed in some detail.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Extremely Short Solitons of the Generalized Reduced Maxwell–Bloch System

Sergey Vladimirovich Sazonov, N. V. Ustinov

Abstract The effect of remote quantum states on two allocated atomic levels during the propagation of extremely short electromagnetic pulses in a medium is considered without using the slowly varying envelope approximation. A generalization of the reduced Maxwell–Bloch system is obtained that is integrable via the inverse scattering transformation method. Its soliton and breather solutions are found and studied.

Inverse scattering transform for two-level systems with nonzero background

Gino Biondini, Ildar R. Gabitov, Gregor Kovačič +1 more

We formulate the inverse scattering transform for the scalar Maxwell-Bloch system of equations describing the resonant interaction of light and active optical media in the case when the light intensity does not vanish at infinity. We show that pure background states in general do not exist with a nonzero background field. We then use the formalism to compute explicitly the soliton solutions of this system. We discuss the initial population of atoms and show that the pure soliton solutions do not correspond to a pure state initially. We obtain a representation for the soliton solutions in determinant form and explicitly write down the one-soliton solutions. We next derive periodic solutions and rational solutions from the one-soliton solutions. We then analyze the properties of these solutions, including discussion of the sharp-line and small-amplitude limits, and thereafter show that the two limits do not commute. Finally, we investigate the behavior of general solutions, showing that solutions are stable (i.e., the radiative parts of solutions decay) only when initially atoms in the ground state dominate, i.e., initial population inversion is negative.

Ultrashort pulse propagation under manipulated resonance conditions

Ashat M. Basharov

The propagation of a polarized ultrashort laser pulse is analyzed by the inverse scattering method under initial conditions including a spatial pulse profile, a state of the medium, and a “switched-on” resonant atom-field interaction. Magnetic degeneracy of atomic levels is taken into account. The Maxwell-Bloch equations are rewritten in Hamiltonian form without redefining the spatial and temporal variables. The inverse scattering method is based on an analysis of a new spectral problem. Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko-type equations are derived, a soliton solution is obtained, and the changes in parameters of two solitons after their collision are calculated. A possible experimental setup for implementing the system under analysis is discussed.

Exact quasi-soliton solutions and soliton interaction for the inhomogeneous coupled Hirota–Maxwell–Bloch equations

C. G. L. Tiofack, Alidou Mohamadou, Timoléon Crépin Kofané +1 more

We propose the system of generalized inhomogeneous coupled Hirota–Maxwell–Bloch equations which describes propagation of an optical soliton in an inhomogeneous erbium-doped fiber with two-level resonant atoms. For this system, higher-order dispersion, self-steepening and self-Raman scattering are assumed to be inhomogeneous, like the group velocity dispersion. The exact analytical multisoliton solutions are obtained by employing the simple, straightforward Darboux transformation based on the obtained 3 × 3 Lax pair. As an example, the one- and two-soliton solutions in explicit forms are generated. Then, we give the relative numerical evolution and discuss the propagation characteristics of the pulse.

Few-cycle solitons of an integrable generalization of the reduced Maxwell-Bloch equations

С. В. Сазонов, N. V. Ustinov

The physical generalization of the system of the reduced Maxwell-Bloch equations describing the nonlinear interaction of the laser pulses with the multilevel quantum medium is obtained without using the slowly varying envelope approximation. It is shown that this system is integrable in the frameworks of the inverse scattering transformation method. The soliton and breather solutions in the form of the unipolar and few-cycle pulses are constructed. Their distinctive features caused solely by the multilevel structure of the medium are discussed. It is revealed that the collision of the solitons can lead to an appearance of the large-amplitude short-living pulse, whose dynamics resembles that of rogue waves.
