Efficient decoding of topological color codes

Pradeep Kiran Sarvepalli, Robert Raussendorf

Color codes are a class of topological quantum codes with a high error threshold and a large set of transversal encoded gates and are thus suitable for fault-tolerant quantum computation in two-dimensional architectures. Recently, computationally efficient decoders for the color codes were proposed. We describe an alternate efficient iterative decoder for topological color codes and apply it to the color code on the hexagonal lattice embedded on a torus. In numerical simulations, we find an error threshold of 7.8$%$ for independent dephasing and spin-flip errors.

Error Threshold for Color Codes and Random Three-Body Ising Models

Helmut G. Katzgraber, Héctor Bombín, Miguel Angel Martin-Delgado

We study the error threshold of color codes, a class of topological quantum codes that allow a direct implementation of quantum Clifford gates suitable for entanglement distillation, teleportation, and fault-tolerant quantum computation. We map the error-correction process onto a statistical mechanical random three-body Ising model and study its phase diagram via Monte Carlo simulations. The obtained error threshold of p(c) = 0.109(2) is very close to that of Kitaev's toric code, showing that enhanced computational capabilities do not necessarily imply lower resistance to noise.

Topological color codes on Union Jack lattices: a stable implementation of the whole Clifford group

Helmut G. Katzgraber, Héctor Bombín, Ruben S. Andrist +1 more

We study the error threshold of topological color codes on Union Jack lattices that allow for the full implementation of the whole Clifford group of quantum gates. After mapping the error-correction process onto a statistical mechanical random three-body Ising model on a Union Jack lattice, we compute its phase diagram in the temperature--disorder plane using Monte Carlo simulations. Surprisingly, topological color codes on Union Jack lattices have a similar error stability to color codes on triangular lattices, as well as to the Kitaev toric code. The enhanced computational capabilities of the topological color codes on Union Jack lattices with respect to triangular lattices and the toric code combined with the inherent robustness of this implementation show good prospects for future stable quantum computer implementations.
