Abstract

Energy exchange control of interacting guided coherent beams in a single-mode planar waveguide with nonlinear coating is analyzed. In the arrangement used the mixed degenerate beams create a real-time grating inside the nonlinear coating medium of the waveguide by evanescent waves transporting into the coating and this grating is responsible for energy exchange. Numerical estimations of energy exchange efficiency show adequate agreement between results for guided and volume geometry. In conclusion, process of two waves mixing in planar geometry with nonlinear coating of the waveguide may be controlled by additional optical beam of another wavelength in the similar way as for conventional volume scheme.

Degenerate four-wave mixing and beam amplification in a Kerr medium

T. H. Liu, I. C. Khoo

According to the theory of two-beam coupling in a thick Kerr medium, which is based on the firstorder coupled-wave method,1 the energy exchange between the two incident beams is forbidden because the phase shift between the intensity grating and refractive-index grating is zero in the Kerr media. The energy exchange must be achieved by artificially creating a phase shift, e.g., by moving the intensity grating with respect to the medium at a speed of the order of one fringe per response time of the medium.

The results of theoretical and experimental investigations into degenerate and non-degenerate four-wave mixing in Fabry-Perot microresonator with dye solution as a nonlinear medium are presented. It is shown that the efficiency of holographic methods for wave-front and frequency conversion may be considerably increased due to the use of recording of dynamic holograms in nonlinear interferometers. Spatial-temporal transformation of light beams for different configurations of interaction has been performed and the methods for control of energy efficiency of intracavity dynamics gratings are discussed.

Four-wave mixing in nonlinear interferometer Fabry-Perot with saturable absorbers

Omar A. Ormachea, O. G. Romanov, Alexei L. Tolstik +3 more

In this work the different schemes of propagation and interaction of the light beams in nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer have been studied theoretically and experimentally. Degenerate and non-degenerate four-wave mixing have been realized in the cavity of Fabry-Perot type using Rhodamine-6G dye and polymethine dye 3274U solution as saturable absorber. The diffraction efficiency of intracavity dynamic grating has been studied in dependence on intensity of interacting beams and parameters of resonator. The theoretical model of the processes of intracavity degenerate and non-degenerate four-wave mixing has been developed and applied to the analysis of the efficiency of light beams conversion by mean of Bragg diffraction from intracavity dynamic gratings. For theoretical description of typical experimental situations we used the round-trip model of nonlinear interferometer adapted for the geometry of degenerate four-wave mixing, which can be realized in the scheme of symmetrical oblique incidence of pump, signal and probe beams to the front and back mirrors of cavity.

Two-Wave Mixing In Resonant Media

Ragini Saxena, Pao-Chi Yeh

We have studied two-wave mixing in resonant media. Illumination with two beams of the same frequency leads to the formation of a spatially local volume grating with no exchange of energy between the writing beams, each beam merely reducing the absorption experienced by the other beam. Nondegenerate two-wave mixing leads to gain for one beam and additional absorption for the other beam as they propagate through the medium. Starting from first principles, the explicit forms of the two-beam coupling constants are derived using third-order perturbation theory, and their dependence on material and experimental factors is examined.

Collisions of spatial solitons in optically induced lattices

O. G. Romanov

We present the theoretical model of coherent interactions of the light beams in a two-level resonant medium, taking into account a spatial-periodic modulation of the parameters of nonlinear medium in an interference field as well as nonlinear behavior of refractive index and absorption coefficient due to optical bleaching. As evidenced by the results of investigations described in this work, the process of the light beams interaction via scattering from dynamically induced optical gratings in two-level resonant medium is characterized by a number of interesting features like mutual attraction and repulsion, irradiation of additional beams probably due to soliton-soliton diffraction mode, formation of dark spatial solitons in the mode of defocusing interaction that can be used for all-optical control over the spatial structure of laser beams. Formation of bound states of spatial cavity solitons upon intracavity four-wave mixing and possibilities for control over all-optical soliton-based operations are also discussed.
