Abstract

We study quantum dynamics of three dressed Bose-Einstein condensates in a high- Q cavity. The quasiparticle excitation spectrum of this system is found numerically. The stability of the quasiparticle excitation is analyzed. It is shown that there exist instabilities in the excitation spectrum.

Dressed Bose-Einstein condensates in high- Q cavities

Elena V. Goldstein, Ewan M. Wright, Pierre Meystre

We propose and analyze a way in which effective multicomponent condensates can be created inside high-$Q$ multimode cavities. In contrast to the situation involving several atomic species or levels, the coupling between the various components of the dressed condensates is linear. We predict analytically and confirm numerically the onset of instabilities in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum.

Quasiparticle spectrum and dynamical stability of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a degenerate Fermi gas

Christopher P. Search, Han Pu, W. Zhang +1 more

The quasiparticle excitations and dynamical stability of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a quantum degenerate Fermi gas of atoms at zero temperature is studied. The Fermi gas is assumed to be either in the normal state or to have undergone a phase transition to a superfluid state by forming Cooper pairs. The quasiparticle excitations of the Bose-Einstein condensate exhibit a dynamical instability due to a resonant exchange of energy and momentum with quasiparticle excitations of the Fermi gas. The stability regime for the bosons depends on whether the Fermi gas is in the normal state or in the superfluid state. We show that the energy gap in the quasiparticle spectrum for the superfluid state stabilizes the low-energy excitations of the condensate. In the stable regime, we calculate the boson quasiparticle spectrum, which is modified by the fluctuations in the density of the Fermi gas.

Three-Wave Mixing of Bogoliubov Quasiparticles in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Roee Ozeri, Nadav Y. Katz, Jeff Steinhauer +2 more

A dressed basis is used to calculate the dynamics of three-wave mixing between Bogoliubov quasiparticles in a Bose condensate. Because of the observed oscillations between different momentum modes, an energy splitting, analogous to the optical Mollow triplet, appears in the Beliaev damping spectrum of the excitations from the oscillating modes.

Excitation Spectroscopy of Vortex Lattices in a Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate

Sungjong Woo, Leslie O. Baksmaty, Seok Jin Choi +1 more

Excitation spectroscopy of vortex lattices in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates is described. We numerically obtain the Bogoliubov-de Gennes quasiparticle excitations for a broad range of energies and analyze them in the context of the complex dynamics of the system. Our work is carried out in a regime in which standard hydrodynamic assumptions do not hold, and includes features not readily contained within existing treatments.

Stability of gap solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Karen Marie Hilligsøe, Markus K. Oberthaler, Karl-Peter Marzlin

We analyze the dynamical stability of gap solitons formed in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. Using two different numerical methods we show that, under realistic assumptions for experimental parameters, a gap soliton is stable only in a truly one-dimensional situation. In two and three dimensions, resonant transverse excitations lead to dynamical instability. The time scale of the decay is numerically calculated and shown to be large compared to the characteristic time scale of solitons for realistic physical parameters.
