Abstract

We present oscillator strength spectra of Rydberg lithium atoms in parallel electric and magnetic fields obtained via the B-spline basis set method combined with model potential. Both the radial and angular wavefunctions are expanded in terms of B-spline functions. The results are in good agreement with previous high-precision experiments. By analyzing the components of partial-wave, we give an explanation to the oscillator strength of part of the spectrum. The method of this paper is simple and effective. It is suggested that the present method can be applied to deal with the problem of Rydberg atom in crossed magnetic and electric field.

Model Potential Calculations of Oscillator Strength Spectra of Rydberg Li Atoms in External Fields

Meng Hui-Yan, Ting-Yun Shi

By combining the B-spline basis set with model potential (B-spline + MP), we present oscillator strength spectra of Rydberg Li atoms in external fields. The photoabsorption spectra are analyzed. Over the narrow energy ranges considered in this paper, the structure of the spectra can be independent of the initial state chosen for a given atom. Our results are in good agreement with previous high-precision experimental data and theoretical calculations, where the R-matrix approach together with multichannel quantum defect theory (R-matrix+MQDT) was used. It is suggested that the present methods can be applied to deal with the oscillator strength spectra of Rydberg atoms in crossed electric and magnetic fields.

Study of Rydberg states of lithium in a static electric field using B-spline functions

Yonglin He, Zhou Xiaoxin, Xiaoyong Li +1 more

The B-spline expansion technique and the method of model potential of atom have been applied to study the properties of Stark states of lithium. Our results for Stark maps, oscillator strength distributions, avoided crossing positions and widths for Li are in good agreement with other reported theoretical calculations and experimental measurement. It shows that the method we used can be applied to investigate the properties of alkali-metal atoms in external static electric field. Finally, for the first time, we obtained the evolution of the oscillator strength spectrum of Li with varying static electric field.

Rydberg states of atoms in parallel electric and magnetic fields

José Paulo Santos, Francisca Mota-Furtado, M.F. Laranjeira +1 more

We present theoretical results for the photoabsorption spectrum of an atom in parallel electric and magnetic fields, using the R-matrix method combined with quantum-defect theory. We introduce a radial basis set which is complete and orthonormal over a semi-infinite interval $[{r}_{0},\ensuremath{\infty}),$ to allow calculations to be performed for high Rydberg states in nonhydrogenic atoms without encountering problems due to linear dependence of the basis set. The nonhydrogenic character of the spectra is analyzed for Li and Rb, and a comparison is made with previous high-precision experiments which shows that the theoretical results agree very well with experiment.

Stark–Zeeman and Blokhintsev Spectra of Rydberg Atoms

Andrei Letunov, Valerii S. Lisitsa

The problem of Rydberg atomic spectra in crossed electric F and magnetic B fields (combined Stark–Zeeman effects), as well as an oscillating electric field are under consideration. The main problem is the great array of radiative transitions between the Rydberg atomic states. The different versions of semiclassical approaches are applied for the solution of the problem. New approximate selection rules are established to simplify the matrix elements of radiative transitions, making it possible to reduce the complex expressions of Gordon’s hypergeometric series to the trivial trigonometric functions. Simple analytical formulas for the dipole matrix elements of a Rydberg hydrogen-like atom in external crossed electric and magnetic fields for Hnα are obtained. The specific calculations are presented for n = 10 to 9 transition both for parallel and perpendicular orientations of F–B fields. The result of Blokhintsev for a single Stark component in oscillating field is generalized for the array of radiative transitions between Rydberg atomic states. Such spectra with large values of modulation index are compared with static ones.

Based on a model potential of alkali metal atoms, the positions of anticrossing of Stark levels of K and Cs atoms and absorbed spectra of multi-photon resonance for Rydberg states of K atoms have been calculated by using B-spline functions. It shows that our results are in good agreement with experimental measurements and other theoretical results.

Calculation of the Energy Spectra of Atom Rb in Strong Magnetic Fields

Lianjun Liu, Zhehua Zhang, Dao-Neng Gao +3 more

The energy spectra and oscillator strength of atom Rb in strong magnetic fields are calculated. The wavefunctions obtained by an improved potential model proposed by some of us are chosen as the zero-order ones. The results show that the diamagnetic term seems to affect substantially only high Rydberg states. And there is a maximum of oscillator strength in each n-manifold, which varies with n increased.
